• There are three mechanisms by which turbulence is produced in roadways
• VIT(vehicle induced turbulence) is the most significant mechanism to
produce turbulence on the roadway
• The other two are structural road induced turbulence and thermal road
induced turbulence

3
• For maximum energy , the wind turbine must be placed at an
optimum level and distance from the road
• Before installation of the device, anemometers are used to measure
the velocity of the wind induced by vehicles
• The following data's are obtained

 Lateral distance from the road

 Optimum height from the ground
 Orientation relative to road

4
LATERAL DISTANCE FROM
THE ROAD
• The purpose of the wind speed measurement at lateral distances
from the road is to investigate the maximum vehicle-induced
turbulent wind at these distances

5
• A sample of the recorded wind velocity of the three
anemometers at various lateral distances (0.5 m, 1.0
m, and 1.5 m) from the road at a height of 0.5 m , 1.0m
, 1.5m

• From the data , the lateral

distance of 1m is found to be
optimum

6
OPTIMUM HEIGHT FROM
THE GROUND

• From the data it can be observed that the

anemometer at 1.0m from the ground recorded the
highest wind velocity

7
. Orientations relative to the road
• The highest wind speed comes from the anemometer
that directed 45 degree to the road

• The second highest is the parallel to the road and the

lowest speed is from the direction that is
perpendicular to the road
