You are going to analyse the effect of the

transformations f(x) + a and f(x + a) on different
functions.
1. Go to the graphing tool Geogebra.
5 minutes 2. In the input bar enter f(x) = x2.
3. In the next input bar enter g(x) = f(x) + a and
press enter. This should create a slider for a.
4. Move the slider and observe how the graph
transforms for positive and negative values of a.
5. Write down your observation and how the
coordinates are affected.
6. Repeat the steps but in step 3 type h(x) = f(x +b)
Challenge and and press enter.

The following polynomial graph shows the profit that results from selling math
books after September 1. The polynomial is p(x)=5x3−20x2+40x−1, where x is the
number of weeks after September 1.

The publisher of the math books were one week behind however; describe how
this new graph would look and what would be the new (transformed) function?
