What
is
sacrifice
?
sacrifice
an act of slaughtering an animal or
person or surrendering a
possession as an offering to God
or to a divine or supernatural
figure.
 The Latin term sacrificium (a sacrifice)
derived from
Latin sacrificus (performing priestly
functions or sacrifices), which combined
the concepts sacra (sacred things)
and facere (to do or perform).
 The Latin word sacrificium came to apply to the
Christian eucharist in particular, sometimes
named a "bloodless sacrifice" In individual non-
Christian ethnic religions, terms translated as
"sacrifice" include the Indic yajna, the
Greek thusia, the Germanic blōtan, the
Semitic qorban/qurban, Slavic żertwa, etc.
4 types of sacrifice
Burnt Offering
-Everything goes to God. Atonement is part
of it but not its sole purpose, which was for
the complete dedication of sins. Different
levels for those who could not afford a ram,
the most expensive, lamb, pigeons, cake of
flour. Complete dedication to God. All meat
was burned up, none to priest.
Purification Offering
-To cleanse from sin and specifically designed
for atonement. It is a blood offering. Some meat
went to the priest. This is not a transfer of sin
into the animal, but a substitution. This was a
means of forgiveness of sins and to cleanse the
Tabernacle. Sin steals life from God, this was
viewed as giving life back to God as a
replacement.
Reparation Offering
-Subcategory of Purification offering. If
cheating and confessed it, must give what
was stolen plus 20% back. If caught
cheating or stealing must pay back the
amount plus double. This repairs the
damaged relationship between God and
men. Restores fellowship to keep unity.
Fellowship Offering
-Some was given to God, some to
the priests, and some to the people.
A meal before God. To emphasize
an on-going relationship with God.
Celebration of restoration.
Animal sacrifice
is the ritual killing of an animal as part of a religion.
It is practiced by adherents of many religions as a
means of appeasing a god or gods or changing
the course of nature.. Animal sacrifice has turned
up in almost all cultures, from the Hebrews to the
Greeks and Romans
Human sacrifice
was practiced by many ancient cultures.
People would be ritually killed in a manner
that was supposed to please or appease
a god or spirit.
Some occasions for human sacrifice found
in multiple cultures on multiple continents
include:
Human sacrifice to accompany the dedication of a
new temple or bridge.
Sacrifice of people upon the death of a king, high
priest or great leader; the sacrificed were supposed
to serve or accompany the deceased leader in the
next life.
Human sacrifice in times of natural disaster.
Droughts, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, etc. were
seen as a sign of anger or displeasure by deities,
and sacrifices were supposed to lessen the divine
ire.
“Without sacrifice, there is
no freedom. Without
freedom, there is no life.
God bless them who give
their all for us.”
