Drive Train Parts – Frequent Customer Questions
Question: Caterpillar gears are too expensive.
Answer: This may be true if customers are running their components to destruction.
Caterpillar designs their gears to be reused at the time of rebuild by incorporating carefully
designed crowning, heat treatment and surface finishes. With good equipment
maintenance practices, gears are reusable for multiple lives. The extended life and reuse
should be considered when comparing prices in the marketplace.

Question: Caterpillar does not make the bearings they use. Why should I buy them
from the Cat Dealer?
Answer: Caterpillar works with bearing suppliers to develop
specific bearings for Cat machine applications, such as debris
resistant and textured bearings for off-highway trucks. The bearings
from Caterpillar are designed to assure proper alignment and protect
mating parts like gears, shafts and carriers. Typically, Caterpillar
bearing suppliers do not offer bearings with special features through
their traditional aftermarket distribution.

Hydraulic Parts – Frequent Customer Questions

Question: Why pay more at a Cat dealer for a cylinder reseal when I can do it
myself for less?
Answer: Standard Cat dealer reseal service includes light honing in addition to genuine
Cat seals. This relatively quick procedure removes scratches and other minor cylinder bore
damage to improve cylinder performance and ensure you get the full life from new seals.
After honing, cylinders are washed to remove contamination. Reassembled cylinders are
pressure tested to make sure they are free of external and internal leaks.

Question: Low and medium pressure hose is a commodity

product. The Cat brand does not add any value.
Answer: Caterpillar uses superior materials and exacting
manufacturing processes. It subjects its Low & Medium hose to
extensive endurance testing. Cat Low & Medium pressure hose
surpasses performance expectations under extensive and above
average working conditions.

Hydraulic Parts – Frequent Customer Questions

Question: Cat hose is the same as the competition?

Answer: Caterpillar has been designing and manufacturing hose products since the
1960s. Cat XT high pressure hose and couplings provide higher abrasion resistance, offer
half the bend radius, and the robust multiple-ply construction allow it to exceed industry
standards for superior hose performance and reliability. Cat couplings are engineered,
manufactured and tested with Cat hose as a system to provide maximum performance in a
wide range of applications.

Question: Hose failures often come at unexpected times – what

should I expect in terms of replacement time to get a hose?
Answer: If you know the hose assembly part number, there is no
competitor that is as convenient as a Cat dealer. The Cat dealer is
the only one a customer can call who can build a hose assembly from
the assembly part number. The dealer is just a telephone call away
and can build most hose assemblies in 30 minutes or less.

Ground Engaging Tools – Frequent Customer Questions

Question: The initial price of Cat GET is higher than most of your competition. In
the end, isn’t it just “dumb” wear iron?
Answer: GET can’t be measured by initial cost alone. There are many factors which need
to be considered when analyzing the true value of the GET being purchased. Penetration,
wear life, productivity, and fuel burn are just some of the considerations when determining
the true value of the product.

Question: Why should I pay more when Cat GET doesn’t last as
long as the competitive product?
Answer: First, we need to be sure the same components are being
compared. It’s misleading to measure two products which physically do
not have the same features or design characteristics. Once this has
been established, then discuss the trade-offs required in attempting to
maximize the productivity of the customer’s machine. While life of the
component is a factor, using a product offering which does not wear as
long but yields higher productivity may be the best option.

Ground Engaging Tools – Frequent Customer Questions

Question: Does Caterpillar manufacture their own GET?

Answer: Caterpillar manufactures a major portion of larger GET casted products in a
foundry owned by Caterpillar in Saltillo, Mexico. While the rest of our product is
manufactured by other suppliers, it is still made to our design, manufacturing and quality
standards and specifications.

Question: All manufacturers are now offering Tungsten Carbide

product. Isn’t it all the same?
Answer: While the application of Tungsten Carbide may look very
similar from a visual perspective, there can be significant differences in
the results achieved related to the way the product is applied.
Consistency in the way the material is applied, application temperature,
granular size of the carbide, etc… all play critical roles in determining
the consistency, quality and wear life of the product.

CATERPILLAR PARTS
VALUE STORY
Ground Engaging Tools – Frequent Customer Questions

Question: Isn’t Cat GET quality the same as equivalent products found in the
marketplace?
Answer: Caterpillar continually strives to find new and better methods to ensure high
quality in their GET products. This commitment to quality is backed by the GET warranty
which covers almost all GET products against breakage under normal operating conditions
until the component is completely worn out.

Question: Doesn’t Caterpillar introduce proprietary GET designs

to attempt to lock up the market?
Answer: Typically all manufacturers apply for patents when a new
innovative system has been designed. However, Caterpillar’s primary
objective in creating new GET systems is to develop safer differentiated
systems designed to reduce downtime and lower overall customer
owning and operating costs.

products to protect that equipment diminishes the value of their investment. Filters and
fluids represent less than 3% of the operating cost for equipment – relatively small
compared to the parts and labor costs of early replacement of fuel injectors, pumps and
actuator valves or the effects of low machine power.

Question: Aren’t Caterpillar’s filter competitors also their main

filter suppliers?
Answer: No. If you look at the filter cut-away kits to view the
components of some of the leading competitors’ products, you’ll see
the differences. In addition, customers frequently tour the Advanced
Filtration System Inc. facility located in Champaign, Illinois (USA) to
witness the manufacturing of Caterpillar’s unique filter.

Maintenance Products – Frequent Customer Questions

Question: My oil distributor gives me a better price because I buy fuel from them.
They have assured me it is the same oil. Is this correct?
Answer: Most of our competitors’ oil does not meet Caterpillar’s specifications designed
and engineered specifically for our equipment. It helps to have the best possible
experience with your equipment – including reduced unplanned service costs
and downtime. DEO ULS is particularly unique in that it also protects your
after-treatment components such as your diesel particulate filter and catalyst.
It is also backwards compatible so you can use it on your newest equipment and
existing equipment.

Question: Caterpillar Extended Life Coolant is too expensive compared to

others. In the end, isn’t it the same coolant?
Answer: Caterpillar set the industry standard (EC-1) for extended life coolants.
The majority of competitive coolants do not meet this standard which is the
minimum required to protect Caterpillar equipment. It was developed specifically
for Caterpillar equipment in order to minimize downtime due to coolant issues.
