measure
Tell/Explain the importance of the
time signature
In the previous levels in
music, you have been taught
how to count. How good are
you in music counting?
BAR LINE
The bar line is a vertical
line drawn across the
staff. The bar line divides
the staff into measures.
BAR/ MEASURE
The space between
two bar lines is called
bar or measure.
The measure indicates the unit of time.
If the time signature is 4 (four-four), it
4

is understood that there will be four

beats in every measure. In 4 (three-
3

four) time signature, there are three

beats in every measure just as there
are two beats in every measure in a
2
4 (two-four) time signature.
DOUBLE BAR
LINES
Double bar lines are two
vertical lines drawn across
the staff which mark the end
of a section or the end of an
entire musical piece.
TIME
SIGNATURE
The time signature is a fraction-
like number written at the
beginning of the staff. The upper
number indicates the number of
beats in every measure. The lower
number tells the kind of note that
will receive one beat.

bar line?

KEEP IN MIND!
1. Uniformity is music is achieved through the used of bar lines.

2. Like in Math and Science, you use specific units to indicate

are or volume of something. The unit of time in music is
indicated by the time signature.

3. When yo write, you put a punctuation mark at the end of a

sentence. In music, the double bar lines are used to mark the
end of a section or the whole musical piece.
