 INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS DATABASE ?

 A database is an organized collection

of data.

 stored and accessed electronically from a

computer system.
 LEGAL MEANS :
 Connected with law
 Enacted and enforced by law
 Permitted by law.

ONLINE :
Computer or device connected to a network (such as
Internet) and ready to use (or be used by) other computers
or devices.
 Computerized or online legal databases are not
new, however the increasing popularity of the
Internet has made them more accessible to
lawyers, students and lay people .

 These venders may be classified further in two

categories according to coverage area i.e.
International & National.

 All the above mentioned legal databases provided legal
information in the form of documents and the quality of
search depends upon the number of document one can
access through these different service providers, for
example Heinonline provides access to more than 100
million pages including access to 1800 law and non-law
related periodicals similarly Jstor provides access to more
than 2000 academic journals.

 There are two categories of companies which are proving

such legal research products-:

 1) Law books publishing houses launching online access

to the books they publish in hard copy.
 2) Independent online databases which provide access
to the different journals, periodicals and books
1) MANUPATRA :

and law-related periodicals.

• Hein Online data base connects directly to few libraries thereby

allowing users to have direct access to the exact or/and relevant
information one is looking for. Especially major libraries
subscribed are:
 1) Law Journal Library: It contains more than 1,700 law and
lawrelated periodicals. Coverage is from the first issue
published for all periodicals and goes through the most-
currently published issues allowed based on contracts with
publishers. Search by article title, author, subject, state or
country published, full text, and narrow by date.

researchers, law students, and lawyers for their practice area.
