Introduction
The importance of work system design is underscored by
an organization’s dependence on human effort.to
accomplish its goals .
Work design is one of the oldest aspect of operation
management.

Work design as Operation Strategy


It is important for management to make design of
work system a key element of its operation strategy.
Despite the major advances in computers and
operation technology, people are still the hearth of
business , they can make or break it regardless of the
technology used.
Technology is important , but technology alone is not
enough.

Job Design
Involves specifying the methods and content of the job.
Job designer focus on what will be done on the job , how
the job will be done and where the job will be done.
Objectives of job design include productivity , safety and
quality of work life.
The acts of specifying the contents and methods of the job

Ergonomics
It is the incorporation of human factors in the design of the workplace.
It relates to design of equipment , design of work ,methods and the
overall design of work environment.

Specialization
Work that concentrates on some aspect of a product or service.
Example
College professors often specialized in teaching certain courses,some
auto mechanics spacialize in transmission repair , and bakers specialize
in wedding cakes.

Behavioral Approach to Job Design


Effort to make jobs more interesting and meaningful.
Job designer frequently consider job enlargement ,rotation and enrichment and
increased used of mechanization.
Job enlargement
Giving a worker a larger portion of the total task by horizontal loading
Horizontal loading: additional work is on the same level of responsibility as the
original job. Increase the skills required
Example
Production worker ‘s job might be expanded so that he or she is responsible or a
sequence of activities instead of only one activity.

Job Rotation
Workers regularly exchange job
Allows workers to broaden their learning experience enables them to fill in for
others in the event of sickness or absenteeism.
Job Enrichment
Involves an increase in the level of responsibility for planning and
coordinating task.
Example
Stock clerks on supermarkets handle re-ordering of goods .
Thus ,icresing their responsibilities.
