Examples of experiences relating to bias/trap in making decisions

MM5009 Strategic Decision Making and Negotiation

The Prudence trap, technology penetration failure
• At one time, we faced the problem of lack of control over general project work which resulted in delays
deviation of the plan), not only because of technical problems and lack of control in the field,
but also because of matters related to the low commitment of work partners,
nonconformities and the availability of tools /equipment and supervisors, and other things that are managerial scope.
• At that time, superiors offered a solution using one of the project's progress reporting applications using an application called "Trello". the
assumption that my superiors catches as a subordinate is to facilitate and accelerate the acquisition of information, perhaps also to be able
to accelerate the response and decision making.
• In fact, before this application is offered to run, the progress reporting system and issues from general project work have been reported
repeatedly with information that tends to be the same with different reporting formats and reporting places, this has been very time-
consuming, especially with the addition of new reporting tools that it adds to the workload, not substitution.
• My other understanding as a subordinate is that superiors need real time, accurate, and complete information to help him make decisions,
this is normal and should be fulfilled by his subordinates.
• However, when this trello is carried out, parallel with the reporting system that was previously running, the involvement of management
relatively still tends to be low in making decisions on the progress of general project delays, not knowing whether the information is still
insufficient or because of other things so that decisions that are encouraging General project work goes back as planned very rarely in the
form of written or unwritten statements, official or informal.
• So that technology penetration is carried out with the objectives as I have stated above, tends to be increasingly inconsistent because there
is an expectation bias towards the impact of the delay in general project work and tends to only increase the workload that should be
allocated for other things, and tends to be limited to ease superiors get information, not to make decisions.
• From this experience, I learned that decision making must be supported by comprehensive information that is
communicated comprehensively so that it gives high confidence to management to make decisions. but this condition
is not always fulfilled with many other job constraints from both superiors and subordinates so that sometimes in
conditions where a decision is needed, the leader must continue to determine his attitude rather than just sticking to
the status quo, it will only add to the turmoil at the technical level in the field.
The Overconfidence trap, choose the right job opportunity (1)
• At one time, I was a mining engineering graduate who was actively looking for work. at that time I registered
with a number of mining companies that opened vacancies.
• In short, came the stage where I followed the selection process at 2 mining companies,
one was one of the gold mining companies in Indonesia (still in the interview selection stage), one was a coal mining company in Indonesia
(already awaiting the offering letter, one more advanced stage). I think it is common for a fresh graduate to take the opportunity that exists
as part of the stage of self-verification of the degree obtained, just like companies that open vacancies for fresh graduates, basically they are
looking for superior seeds from several universities to can join their company, this phenomenon is like a simple supply demand concept.
• At that time, I was with some of my friends who were taking part in the selection process of the interview stage at the gold mining company
that I mentioned earlier. at the same time, the coal mining company that I mentioned earlier announced the results of the selection and gave
the offering letter, me and a some of my friends who were then in the process of selecting the gold mining company finally agreed to accept
the offering letter and resign the selection process being carried out .
• Consideration of the decision when it was dominated by the level of certainty and the amount of benefits obtained, and very minimal
considering other factors / information. At first I felt this was a decision that I made was the right and rational decision.
• Previously, during the selection process at the gold mining company that I mentioned earlier, we agreed to resign and as a form of our moral
responsibility to the management of the company, we proposed several other partners who did not qualify for being able to be passed, at
least as a substitute. quantity).
• I and some of my friends then continued the process that was almost nearing the end of the coal mining company that
I mentioned earlier, during the process things that were beyond consideration arose and began to feel that we were
trapped in a condition of being overconfident in the offer, tending to be rushed , while the data / information obtained
is still very minimal, and stuck in the tangible benefit framework. For example, the condition of companies with quite
complex political situations, unclear employee status, ambiguous and controversial contractual statements, etc., all of
these are almost completely excluded from consideration in decision making.
The Overconfidence trap, choose the right job opportunity (2)
• From this incident I can learn that,
• In order not to rush into a decision, complete and comprehensive
information is needed as a consideration in making a decision.
Efforts should not be trapped in a framing personal framing and tend to see from a little
point of view.
• I do not claim that this is a wrong decision, if in this condition it is not right or wrong that
is the problem, but it is a decision that must be made, and I have made it. there are
some deviations (things beyond expectations) that occur before and after the
recruitment process, it becomes the core of learning that I must take to be a reflection of
future decision making.
• The fact is I am still in this company, able to adjust and develop myself. Apart from the
polemic that happened when I first started being an employee, the fact is that me and
some of my friends got through it. Of course the deviations that we have found, do not
necessarily lead to deeply regret we have learned much from good/bad experience
