What is Tsunami
• A tsunami is a series of waves caused by
earthquakes or undersea volcanic
eruptions.
• Tsunamis are giant waves caused by
earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under
the sea.
• Tsunami waves may travel as fast as jet
planes over deep waters, only slowing
down when reaching shallow waters.
What Causes Tsunami
• These awe-inspiring waves are typically
caused by large, undersea earthquakes
at tectonic plate boundaries.
• Tsunamis may also be caused by
underwater landslides or volcanic
eruptions. They may even be launched,
as they frequently were in Earth’s
ancient past, by the impact of a large
meteorite plunging into an ocean.
Facts About Tsunami
• A tsunami can be generated by a giant meteor impact
with the ocean. These waves can reach heights of
over 100 ft.
• Tsunamis can travel at speeds of about 500 miles or
805 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as a jet plane.
• Scientists can accurately estimate the time when a
tsunami will arrive almost anywhere around the
world based on calculations using the depth of the
water, distances from one place to another, and the
time that the earthquake or other event occurred.
The Deadliest Tsunami in Recorded
History
• In the wake of the 9.1 magnitude megathrust
earthquake that struck off the western
coastline of Sumatra, Indonesia, a colossal
wave propagated from its epicenter,
destroying coastal infrastructure and claiming
nearly 230,000 lives across 15 countries.
• The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami is the
deadliest tsunami in recorded history, and it
caused an estimated $14 billion in damages at
the time.
