THE SPANISH PERIOD
A QUICK REVIEW!
 Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer sailing
for Spain landed on Homonhon island in the
Philippines in March 16, 1521. The mission of the
Spaniards is to spread CHRISTIANITY

 The actual work of colonization of the Philippines


started in 1565 during the time of Miguel Lopez de
Legazpi, the first Spanish governor-general in the
Philippines.

 Literature started to flourish during his time.



THE FIRST BOOKS
Doctrina Cristiana is written by Fray Juan de Plasencia in 1593

 Nuestra Senora del Rosario is written by Fr. Blancas de San Jose in


1602

 Libro de los Cuatro Postprimeras de Hombre is written by Fr.


Francisco Blancas de San Jose in 1604

 Ang Barlaan at Josephat is translated by Fr. Antonio de Borja in


1712

 The Pasion is written by Gaspar Aquino de Belen in 1704

 Urbana at Felisa written by by Modesto de Castro

 Ang mga Dalit kay Maria (Psalms for Mary) written by Fr. Mariano
Sevilla in 1865
FOUR LITERARY FORMS
1.Religious Literature – religious lyrics written by
ladino poets were included in early
catechism and were used to teach Filipinos
the Spanish language.

A. Pasyon – long narrative poem about the


passion and death of Christ. The most
popular was “Ang Mahal na Passion ni Jesu
Cristong Panginoon Natin

B.Cenaculo – dramatization of pasyon, it


shows the passion and death of Christ.

2. Secular Literature - (non-religious)

A.Awit - colorful tales of chivalry made for singing and


chanting

B.Korido – metrical tale written in octosyllabic quatrains


Example: Ibong Adarna by José de la Cruz

C. Prose Narratives – written to prescribe proper


decorum
Example: Joaquin Tuason's "Ang Bagong Robinson"
(The New Robinson) in 1879

3. Propaganda Literature – these were form in
satires, editorials, and news articles that aimed
to attack the Spanish rule.
The Propaganda trinity is composed of:
Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, Graciano
Lopez Jaena, Antonio Luna, Mariano Ponce,
Jose Maria Panganiban, and Pedro Paterno.
