either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way. The Importance of Language
As a writer, it is important not
only to think about what you say, but how you say it. 1. The bottle rolled off the table like a teardrop. 2. The flowers danced in the gentle breeze. 3. She was fairly certain that life was a fashion show. 4. She was so happy; her smile was a mile wide. Mile is an English unit of length/measurement It is currently defined as 5,280 feet, 1,760 yards, or exactly 1,609.344 meters.
where: 1 mile = 1.60934 km
SIMILE -is a comparison between two different things using the word “like” or “as” to make the comparison. Ex.The bottle rolled off the table like a teardrop.
(“I like pizza.”) X because there is no comparison
METAPHOR - a comparison between two unlike things not using the word “like” or “as.” -direct comparison between two objects
ex. She was fairly certain that life was a
fashion show. PERSONIFICATION - is a figure of speech in which a thing – an idea or an animal – is given human attributes. -attribution of human qualities to a thing
Ex. The flowers danced in the gentle breeze.
HYPERBOLE - is when you use language to exaggerate what you mean or emphasize a point. It’s often used to make something sound much bigger and better than it actually is or to make something sound much more dramatic.
Ex. She was so happy; her smile was a mile
wide. Examine the following statements and identify what figure of speech is used. 1. The flowers were blooming, and the bees kissed them every now and then.
2. The typical teenage boy’s room is a disaster
area.
3. The handshake felt like warm laundry.
4. I’m so sad that I’m drowning in tears.
