• Dharmavaram is a city in Anantapur district of

the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.


• The city is known for its handloom silk sarees,
cotton, silk weaving industries and leather
puppets.
Dharmavaram Sarees

 Dharmavaram silk sarees also known as Rajwadi
sarees are known for their broad borders and golden
brokade embroidered pallus available in muted
colors, exquisite designs and varrying patterns.
 The sarees have rich color combination, with elegant
prints on the fabric adorned by stones and crystal
work mostly preferred to wear on big occasions and
parties.
Origin and History

 This fabric originated from a small structured town called
Dharmavaram, which is located in the rural parts of
Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh.
 The Dharmavaram Silk sarees had a history of around 100
years. The weavers used to weave the Silk sarees from the
time of the British only. During that time the people used
to grow the Mulberry trees in large numbers around the
Bangalore areas.
Stages of Production

 Quality of silk – cocoons are boiled in steam to obtain
yarn and Denier silk and undergoes twisting and
formation of warp and weft.
 Degumming of silk purification – process involves boiling of
yarn with soda ash and soap to remove natural gums.
 Plying of Yarn – Twisting of yarn is done to create a balanced
yarn

 Dyeing – acid dyes are used to obtain the shades of
rainbow colors, plied yarn absorbs dye in hot
water.Kuttu Dharmavaram sari weaving involves tie
and die method.
 Drying – after the above process, the yarn is dried
indoor on bamboo sticks.
Pre-loom process

 Winding of hank yarn into warp and weft – charka, shift
bamboo and bobbin are used to form warp. While,
the weft is made with help of a pirn.
 Street sizing – the warp extension, spraying of rice
conjee ensures suitable weaving followed by drying.
 Weaving process – it involves Warp and Weft method of
weaving and sometimes replaced by Jacquard
weaving and Dobby. Usage of only pitlooms for weaving
and no powerlooms and petni technique.
 Cutting and folding – designing and cutting per the goods
demand for marketing take place
Motifs & Design

 The Dharmavaram saree has attractive designs like
peacock, elephant designs, the aesthetic temple
borders , these motifs and designs replicate the
religious culture, the fabric includes gold brocaded
patterns.
Usage

 The saris are worn in winter or cold conditions, for
functions, and are mostly used by dancers of Bharath
Natyam and Kuchipudi.[5]

tradition. The designs and wearing style of the clothes closely
connected to their culture.

Women in Karnataka wear their traditional


dress of Saree. The sarees are weaved with
cotton and silk fabric. As a result most of
the Karnataka people prefer to wear silk
sarees. In ancient times Karnataka region
was famous for silk fabric. Still, we can
find beautifully designed silk sarees in
every place of Karnataka. Many traders
and fashion designers visit Karnataka to
buy high-quality silk fabrics. The varieties
of brocades, sleek chiffons, and smooth
silks are also available in Karnataka, these
silk variety of sarees makes extra beauty to
the women. Mysore and Bangalore are the
main silk industrial in India.
Karnataka Traditional Costumes of Men:

The traditional dree for men in Karnataka is Lungi. Men wore the
lungi and wear the shirt. To cover the shoulder men take over
Angavastram. On the special occasions and during the festival
seasons men wear Panche, this is in white color and seems like Dhoti.
