Poliomyelitis is a viral disease that can affect nerves and can lead to partial or full paralysis. -highly infectious viral disease, which mainly affects young children. -is a disease caused by infection with the

poliovirus.

Types: *Paralytic (extent muscle


weakness) *Nonparalytic (muscle stifness, particularly on neck and back) *Abortive polio (only throat and intestines are infected.) *Bulbar polio (Respiraory tract involved impairs breathing.)

Causes: -The virus spreads by direct person-to-person contact, by contact with infected mucus or phlegm from the nose or mouth, or by contact with infected feces and eating contaminated food fecal-oral route

Poliovirus -which resides in the intestinal tract and mucus in the nose and throat -the virus only affects humans and it is more during summer months.
Incubation Period :7-12 days.
