CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESFUL

RESEARCH
Research is systematic efforts designed to obtain verifiable
knowledge, and accessible to public and scrutiny by peers,
transparent – in structure, process and outcomes, applicable in
principles to other researchers and research contexts.
 Wide Reading/Literature Review
 Thoroughness
 Independent of Opinion/Critical
 Originality/Creativity/Novelty
 Effectiveness
WHAT IS QUANTITATIVE
RESEARCH?
Quantitative research is the numerical representation and
manipulation of observations for the purpose of describing and
explaining the phenomena that those observations reflect.
- Cressell (1994) : an inquiry into a social or human problem,
based on testing a theory composed variables, measured with
numbers and analyzed with statistical procedure, in order to
determine whether the predictive generalizations of the theory hold
true
- Cohen (1980) : it is a social research that employs empirical
methods and empirical statements
APPROACHES TO QUANTATIVE
RESEARCH
The quantitative research approach is typically used
to answer questions about the relationship among
measured variables with the purpose of explaining ,
predicting and controlling phenomena.
It is usually start with a performed hypothesis to be
tested. The objective is to establish, confirm or
validate relationships and to develop generalizations
that contribute to theory.
WHEN DO WE USE QUANTATIVE RESEARCH
METHODS?

Quantitative research’s ultimate goal is to

generalize the “truth” found in the samples to the
population (while the ultimate goal of any
qualitative research is to understand a certain
phenomenon.)
INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT)
IN TEACHING SCIENCE AND HEALTH
IN THE PUBLIC ELEMENTARY
SCHOOLS OF DINALUPIHAN
DISTRICT:AN ASSESMENT
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction
Science aims to help every Filipino learners to gain a functional understanding
of scientific concepts and principles linked with real – life situation and acquire
scientific skills, attitudes and values necessary to analyze and solve today’s
problems. Science begins as the children are taught to observe, monitor and
describe their interaction with their immediate environment. The teaching of
Science offers learners the ability to access a wealth of knowledge and
information which will contribute to an overall understanding of how and why
things like they do. Science is able to explain the mechanics and reasons behind
the daily functioning of complex systems, which range from the human body to
sophisticated modern methods of transport. Children are able to use this
knowledge to understand new concepts, make well-informed decisions and pursue
new interests. Science also helps to provide tactile or visible proof of many facts
read about in books or see on television ; this helps to increase understanding and
helps children and teenagers to retain that information. (Atienza,2007)
According to Zulueta (2006), Science and Health plays a vital role
in man’s lives today. In here, parents, teachers and the community
members have a commitment to guide and facilitate the learning of
children so that the progress of Science and Health can be
acknowledge. In this sense, technology plays a different role in the
teaching- learning process, especially in Science and Health subject
because through technology the teacher can easily explain and
facilitate the learning facts which are impossible to manipulate
through hands- on. Technology is also interactive, thus the boredom
of pupils will be lessened and the children will enjoy the lesson
being discussed by their teachers. Science subjects from Elementary
Grades include basic health concepts and thus the nomenclature
Science and Health is being used.
The ICT plays a very important role in administrative function
as ell as in the teaching and learning process. The Department
of Education ( DepEd) enjoins all concerned to support the
project and extended every possible assistance to expedite the
completion of DepEd Computerization Program (DCP).
With the legal mandate of promoting the right of all citizens
to take appropriate steps in making education accesible to all,
DepEd is geared towards the transformation of education
through the DepEd Computerization Program (DCP). It aims
to provide public schools with appropriate technologies that
would enhance the teaching-learning process and meet the
challenges of the 21st century.
Corpus (2007), stated that technology contributes much to
the improvement of the teaching – learning process and the
humanization of life. It is indeed a blessing. But when not
used properly, it becomes a detriment to instruction and
human progress and development. Technology is made for the
teacher but it does not mean that it can replace the teacher’s
role in the classroom. This means that the technology is meant
to serve man in all aspects of life including instruction. It is
man, and in the context of the classroom, the teachers, who
determines how technology ought to be used in order to reap
the maximum benefits that come along with technology
By assessing the Information and Communication
technology in teaching teachers and pupils can acquire
knowledge and become competitive graduates in the near future
because education is at the very core of economic development
and a key to ending poverty. In the world economy today,
every nation’s success depends on the education of its people.
ICT will increasingly be at the center of the education process.
ICT offers new and creative ways to combine classroom
experience, home learning, global outreach, and connectivity of
students and teachers to the burgeoning world of learning.
Classrooms everywhere, from primary schools to higher
education, will be dramatically transformed in exciting and
enriching ways.
The researcher’s keen interest in assessing the Information and
Communication Technology in teaching Science and Health in the
Public Elementary Schools of Dinalupihan District has greatly
motivated him to undertake this study because he believes that this
program revitalizes schools to make them dynamic, collaborative and
innovative learning institutions where the students can become more
motivated, inquisitive and creative learners thus, education and
technology go hand in hand to move forward for the nation’s
economic development and for nation’s needs
Statement of the Problem
The study aimed to assess the, ‘’Use of Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching Science and Health in
the Public Elementary Schools of Dinalupihan District for the School
Year 2015-2016’’
Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:
1.How many the profile of the respondents be described in terms of:
1.1 age;
1.2 sex;
1.3 civil status:
1.4 highest educational attainment; and
1.5 years in service?
3. Is there significant difference on the assessment on the use of
Information and Communication Technology in teaching Science and
Health when they were grouped according to:
3.1. age;
3.2. sex;
3.3. civil status;
3.4. highest educational attainment; and
3.5. years in service?
4. What are the problems encountered by the responds on the use of
Information and Communication Technology?
5. What are the suggested solutions to the problems encountered by
the respondents on the use of Information and Communication
Technology?
Significance of the Study
This study may be of primary importance to:
School Administrators. The results of the study may serve as a
‘‘looking glass strategy’’ to the principals in the sense that they may
realize the uses of technologies in teaching Science and Health. They will
be able to plan as how the teachers can further be improved their teaching
process through the us of eClassroom which will in a way of help in
improving the pupil’s learning style in Science
Teachers. This study will help them to determine the different uses of
the technologies that they can be used in teaching Science and Health.
This will also give them the avenue to know how their teaching strategies
can further be improved through the use modern of technology.
Pupils. The greatest benefit will accrue to the pupils because they will
be able to know the uses of technology which in a way affect their
academic performance. This will give them an idea on how they can
further enhance their learning process through the use of technology. The
findings can also provide appreciation of the use of technology in Science
and Health.
Parents. They will be able to determine the different
technologies that can help their children toward teaching
and learning activities in Science and Health. This will give
them a chance to realize that they should give some
guidance and assistance/support to their children to
improve their academic performance.
Future Researchers. To the future researchers, this study
may offer literature and findings that they may find useful
in the conduct of their study.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The study assessed the Use of Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) in teaching Science and Health in the Public
Elementary Schools of Dinalupihan District during the school year
2015-2016.
Variables included in the study are the respondents’ profile in terms
of age , sex, civil status, highest educational attainment and length of
service. The researcher assessed the perception of the respondents on
the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in
teaching Science and Health based on development of high order
thinking skills, development of abilities to seek, evaluate, organize, and
present information, and development of life-long learning, and what
are the problems met by the respondents on the use of ICT and the
suggested solutions.
The study is limited to the school science teachers in the Public
Elementary Schools of Dinalupihan District of the School Year 2015-
2016.
Increasing Pupil’s
Disaster Risk Awareness
and Preparedness
Context and Rationale
An old adage states. ‘‘Tell me and I forgot, show me and I
remember, involve me and I understand.’’ The last part of this
statement is the essence of learning engagement which implies
involvement in learning skills and attitudes that permit you to
seek resolutions and issues while you construct new knowledge.
The Philippines is one of the top countries in the world at risk
of climate-related disasters. For populations subsisting at the
poverty line in particular, but also the nation as a whole, daily
lives and wellbeing are routinely challenged. The Philippines
government takes disaster risk seriously and has devoted
significant resources to build disaster capacity and reduce
population exposure and vulnerability, nationally and locally.
In view of this, the Department of Education (DepEd) implements one
of the provisions of the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Act of 2010 (DRRM Act) to integrate DRRM in the school
curriculum and other educational programs, and to heighten the level of
resiliency of students toward natural disasters. It is one of the learning
competencies both in Basic Education Curriculum and in K to 12
Curriculum. It requires the pupils to be prepared in times of the spate of
natural calamities. The DepEd reiterated the need for strengthening the
capacity of schools to enable them to respond in the event of disasters and
emergencies to save more lives and ensure resilience.
Dinalupihan Elementary School on the other hand, which is located at
the Municipality of Dinalupihan serves as acatch basin of flood in the
province of Bataan that is why it promotes and implements disaster
prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response and rehabilitation and
recovery that leads to- “Safer, adaptive and disaster resilient Filipino
communities towards sustainable development.”
According to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, aside from
bolstering partnerships among its internal and external factors, the
school must strength the capacity of the school , therefore
communities, to help minimize and efficiently respond to the
impact of disasters.
With the provision of DRRM Act, comprehensive, and integrated
knowledge building about disaster education is intensified among
students under the K-12 Education Program. The youth are
empowered to be proactive members of community on DRR and
sustainable development. It is relevant and significant to assess the
capacity of students on DRR to ensure that the senior high school
education of the K-12 curriculum is substantial on the culture of
safety and resilience toward disaster risks. Schools are also required
to study weather disturbances, their signs, warning systems and
effects and regularly conduct disaster response drills
It was observed that some of the pupils seem to their disaster awareness and
preparedness. Moreover, this situation needs to be attended by the teachers using
learning engagement through intervention program providing varied self –
learning activities that will definitely elevate pupil’s interest to gain more
knowledge.
In the theory of Constructivism, introduced by Piaget (1981) and Bruner
(1990), they gave stressed to knowledge discovery of new
meaning/concepts/principles in the learning process. They suggested various
strategies to foster knowledge discovery, among these, is making students engaged
in gathering unorganized information from which they can induce ideas and
principles. The constructivist view of learning ca point towards a number of
different teaching practices. In the most general sense, it usually means
encouraging students to us active techniques (experiments, real-world problem
solving) to create more knowledge and then to reflect on and talk about what they
are doing and how their understanding is changing. The teacher makes sure she
understands the students’ pre-existing conceptions, and guides the activity to
address them and then build on them. (Lucido, 2007)
In line with the above reality, the researcher was
motivated to conduct an action research to increase
Pupil’s Disaster Risk Awareness and Preparedness
through a Safer Resource Material for a week –
long lesson. The researcher also wanted to identify
the effect of the said material in increasing pupils’
understanding from the results of pre-test and post-
test.
Research Question
This action research will aim to increase disaster risk awareness
and preparedness of the grade six pupils through a safer resource
material for the School year 2018-2019
Specifically, it will seek to answer the following questions:
1.What is the performance of the two groups based on the pre-test
results?
2. What is the performance of the two group based in the post-test
results?
3.Is there significant difference pre-test score of the control and
experimental group?
4. Is there significant difference between post-test score of the
control and experimental group?
5. Is there significant effect to increase pupils’ disaster risk
awareness and preparedness through safer resource material?
Significance of the Study
After achieving the main thrust of this problem which is to increase pupils’ risk
awareness and preparedness through a safer resource material, the following
stakeholders will benefit from this study:
Pupils. This study may be a great help to pupils as it could give them motivation
on how to cope with their difficulty and motivate them to study hard to overcome
their weakness in Science and to be more aware and prepared in any disaster or
calamity that might happen in the country.
Teachers. They may find the result of the study helpful in planning and initiating
appropriate materials in teaching Science at any learning level inside the classroom
and encourage other teachers to upgrade their methods and techniques in the
teaching-learning process.
School Administration. The results of the study may serve as a “looking glass
strategy” to the school heads in the sense that they may realize the uses of Safer
Resource Material in teaching Science and Health. They will be able to plan as how
the teachers can further be improved their teaching process which will in a way
help in improving the pupils’ learning style in Science. The result of the study may
be a great help to realize the importance of disaster preparedness plan in the school.
Significance of the Study
Curriculum Makers. Through this study, curriculum makers
may able to devise the curriculum in strengthening the academic
performance of the students to achieve quality education.
Science Supervisors. The result of the study may serve as the
catalyst in improving instructional methods and identify the needs
that caused the weakness in achieving good scientific skills.
Implementing of the strategies and other measures necessary to
obtain quality education could be devised by them.
Parents. The findings of the study may enhance parents’ active
participation in supporting the needs of their child and improve their
relationship as supporters and partners of the school in achieving high
academic performance of their children.
Future Researchers. To the future researchers, this study may offer
literature and findings that they may find useful in the conduct of
their study.
Scope and Limitations
The focus of this study is to determine the effectiveness of Safer
Resource Material to improve disaster risk awareness and
preparedness of the elementary children. Participants of this study
includes 60 Grade-6 pupils of Dinalupihan Elementary School
during the School Year 2018-2019. They will be chosen using
Purposive Sampling.
