SCOPE OF PRACTICE
Infusion therapy is now part of the professional practice of
majority of nurses. The scope of practice ranges from
1. Caring for an Individual peripheral cannula in site.
2. Nursing a part of multiple parenteral and hemodynamic
theories in critical environment.
3. Care of the patient and the IV device including the risks
associated in the therapy.
THE INFUSION THERAPY ENCOMPASSES THE
FOLLOWING GUIDELINES IN ITS PRACTICE:
1. Involvement of patients/clients
When the administration of IV medications of fluids is
on a longer period many clients will be well enough to
participate in decisions around device and site
selection, It is important to consider the patient’s
lifestyle.
2. Patient Assessment
Begins by identifying what medications the patient will
require and the route of administration. If IV, take into
account how long the treatment will last how frequent,
the volume to be infused, with their in the hospital or
other settings . the nurses then would match against
the various access devices peripheral cannula , midline
catheters, CVADs, basic it also on the physician`s
orders.
3. Evidence based care
Regular updating of clinical standards to include the latest
research findings and best practices will ensure that all
patients can benefit from safe care

4. Infection context
This is integral in IVT.
It best practice example is aseptic non touch technique (ANTT)
comprising a number of fundamental components including
reducing environmental risks, hand cleansing, non touch
technique protection for “Key Parts” correct cleaning of “Key
Parts” , use of gloves and sterile fields (Rowling and laud,
2006)
5. Research
Advances in clinical care depend on research and
discrimination of its findings, whether its new therapy,
method of delivery or a new piece of equipment.
Research should be employed to expand the base of
nursing knowledge in infusion therapy to validate and
improve practice, to advance professional
accountability and enhance decision making (INS,
2006)
6.Consent
It is ethical and legal that consent is obtained
before any procedure is done, it is the
responsibility of the nurse to ensure that the
patient understands what is to be done.
Consent can be given orally in writing or by
cooperation (NMC,2008
THE LAW THAT PROMULGATE THE LEGAL
PRACTICE OF IVT IN THE PHILIPPINES:
RA 7164 – the Philippine Act of 1991 Sec.
27(a) Art. V states that I.V injection is
within the scope of nursing practice.
This law formalized the adoption of IVT
practice of nurses in the Philippines
 The nursing standards on IVT were established
in 1993 on ANSAP as guide for all nurses
practice IVT in the Philippines.

 February 4, 1994 – The PRC- Board of NSG

promulgated resolution NO. 08 – Adopts the
ANSAP-IV nursing standards of practice. It
called for a “special training” of all nurses
before any IVT practice.
 On June 9-11,1994- a training was conducted
by ANSAP had undergone the same TOT at
the Philippines Heart Center in October 1993.
 New Concepts and evolving technology in
IVT needed more revisions in the standards
for safer practice. On May 17, 1995, the
standards were adopted as part of the
protocol solver special training in IVT.
 Revisions of the nursing standard on
intravenous practice has continuously
been revised to keep up w/ the increasing
advancement in science and technology
amount the globe. To date, the standards
gave been revised nine (11) times.
 ANSAP true to its mission of raising the bar of
excellence in nursing practice, sought
application of membership with the infusion
Nurse Society that on December 2011
recognized as the global an Priority in infusion
nursing. One pillar of INS mission is developing
and disseminating standards of practice. On
Feb 25, 2012 the application was approved
and ANSAP became an affiliate member of this
pustigions organization.
 An ANSAP officer, Dr. Rodolfo Borromeo on
the Taping Technique presented a
research paper at the INS convention in
North Carolina on May 18-23, 2013. In
this convention the ANSAP Inc. has been
included among the ten (10) affiliates
throughout the world, which include
1. INS UK and Ireland
2. Intravenous and Chemotherapy
nurses society
3. Intravenous nursing new Zealand
4. Russian nurses association (RNA)
5. Colombian Association of
Intravascular Therapy (ACOTEIN)
6. Infusion Nurses Society India
