METHODS OF SEEDS TESTING
There are several ways to test seeds. These methods have been practiced by
local farmers and other crop growers according to calacala (1977)
BREAKING THE SEED COAT-this method is practiced with seeds that
have a hard seed coat which impermeable to water ang oxygen.
WINNOWING-seed are placed in a shallow woven basket or “bilao”to
winnow the seed. All seeds being blown away are empty and are not
viable. Those that remain in the “bilao” are good seeds.
GERMINATION TEST-this maybe done in seedbeds, seed boxes, seed
trays, petri dishes, recycled materials polyethylene bags or in a peace of
cloth(ragdoll method).

SEED TRAY

•A tray that
once filled with
soil or compost
is used
for planting
Seeds.
POLYETHYLENE BAG
• A polythene bag is
a bag made of
thin plastic, especially
one used to store or
protect food or
household articles.
SEED BOX
• Seed box Preparation
• Soak used seed boxes in a
solution of one part bleach to
nine parts water for half an hour.
• Set the box on top of a shallow
tray that is slightly larger than
the seed box.
• Fill the box to within a half inch of
the rim with potting mix.
• Water the potting mix thoroughly
30 minutes before seeding.
RECYCLED MATERIALS

• Recycling is the process of

recovering scrap or waste and
reprocessing the material into
useful products. Glass, paper,
plastic, and metals such as
aluminum and steel are all
commonly recycled. Dead
plants, fruit and vegetable
scraps can
be recycled through
composting.
PETRI DISHES
• We offer cell culture dishes
in wide selections of format,
material, and surface
modification. Each is
designed and produced
with highest quality
standards to promote
healthy cells and
reproducible results.
FLOATING IN WATER
According to INGO(2005), seed usually contain an embryo inside and some
food reserves to provide the energy for germination when seeds are placed in
water, it could be observed of that some of the seed sink and some float.

SEED GERMINATION
Germination in it’s simplest definition is the development of the seed into a
young plant or seedling.
THE PORTION OF THE SEEDLING BETWEEN THE
RADICLE AND THE FIRST LEAF LIKE PART
(PLUMULE)
In some cases, when seed sown fail to germinate, the following maybe the
reason according to Calacala (1977)
 The seed are in their dormant stage.
 The seed coat is thick and hard.
 The seed are immature.
 The seed have dead embryo.
 The ground is too dry.
 The weather is too cold.
DETERMINING THE PERCENTAGE
GERMINATION OF SEED
• Based on the lecture note in agronomy 11(NVSIT)there are rule in computing
for the percentage of germinating seeds
RULE 1: if the test 100seeds, the number of seeds germinated equal the
percentage germination of the seeds.
Example: You tested 100seeds of eggplant using thhe ragdoll method,85seeds
germinated, the percentage germination of the seeds then is 85%
RULE 2: if you test less than or more than 100seeds use the formula below in the
computing the percentage germination of the seeds.
Example: Mr.X tested 125seeds of hybrid tomato and 105 germinated. What is
the percentage germination of the tomato seeds.
FORMULA
%germination = No. of seeds germinated x 100
no.of seed tested
=105 x 100
125
%G =84
RULE 3: if you found out that the percentage germination of your seeds is
below 80, you need to adjust your seed bulk. Use the formula below in the
adjusting the seed bulk.
Example: you needed 200seedling to plant your garden, you found out that
your seed have only 75% germination. How many seed will you sow?
FORMLA

Adjusted amount of seed = amount of seed

needed X100
%germination
