WHAT IS ANTHROPOLOGY?
Anthropology, by definition is the study of infinite
curiosity about human beings.
The term comes from the Greek word anthropos
for “man, human” and logos for “study”.

people’s ability to use language
and other symbolic forms of
representation.
WHAT IS ANTHROPOLOGY?
Anthropology has been defined as that
branch of knowledge which deals with the
scientific study of man, his works, his body,
his behavior, and values in time and in space.
WHAT IS ANTHROPOLOGY?
It is the study of physical, social, and cultural
development and behavior of human beings
since their appearance on earth.

It is the exploration and study of human


diversity around the world. It gathers and
analyzes data on cross cultural and inter
societal differences in social institutions,
cultural beliefs and practices, and
communication style.
ANTHROPOLOGISTS
Is a scientist who researches and studies
sociohistorical, archaeological, linguistical and
biological aspects of humanity, especially as they
apply to the development of modern man.
KEY CONCEPTS
 Evolution – explains how much the past
contributed about people’s biology and culture.
FIELDS OF ANTHROPOLOGY

Biological Anthropology
-Study of man’s biological
foundations, race evolution,
genetic inheritance, racial
classifications, human adaptability
and variation, fossil record of
human evolution as well as
forensic studies
A. Racial History- study of the nature of races
B. Paleontology- study of fossils
C. Human Genetics- study of various ways of
inheritance that take place in man
D. Primatology- study of primates or
homonids
E. Neuroanthropology- study of the evolution
of the human brain
F. Human Osteology- study of skeletal
materials
G.Forensic Anthropology- analysis and
identification of human remains.
FIELDS OF ANTHROPOLOGY
 Cultural Anthropology
- Involves the study of how people living in present-
day society and their culture and also studies how
people make their living, how people interact with
each other, what beliefs people hold, and what
institutions organize society.
A. Ethnography- describes the culture of an
ethnic group
B. Ethnology- analyzes and compares
culture of people and how these
cultures develop and changes
 C. Archaeology
- Focuses on the study of the past, rather than the
living, human societies and cultures. Through the
study of artifacts such as human fossils, tools,
pottery, etc.
 D. Linguistic Anthropology
- Focuses on how people use language in
particular cultures and often work with
people who have unwritten languages or
with languages that very few people
speak.
ANTHROPOLOGY TODAY
Anthropology had become a very diverse
field with numerous areas of specialization. New
research agendas have also emerged and several
new trends in the world’s culture have dramatically
changed anthropology.
In addition, the world faces problems of
poverty, violence and environmental degradation.
In response to these trends, many anthropologist
has shifted their studies to urban culture and the
workings of global culture. Much new research
examines the international exchange of ideas,
beliefs, and cultural practices.

brought up that way”
By their “culture”. It’s
due to the difference
on how they lived in
this world.
