BED SIDE CLINICS
INTRODUCTION
• Bedside Clinic is one of the clinical teaching method which is carried
out in clinical area and is one of the best method of teaching. It is very
lively and interesting as it correlates reality with theory.
MEANING
It is a type of clinical teaching method where the teacher and the students
meet in order to carry out the assessment in presence of the
patient at the bedside.
It is a teaching in the presence of the patient.
GOALS OF BEDSIDE CLINIC
• Discuss the advantages and challenges of teaching at the bedside.
• Explore strategies for improving teaching at the bedside.
• Review techniques for bedside teaching in the office setting.
PURPOSE:
• Provide a learning experience for students.
• Improve the students ability to solve problems.
• Realize the needs for understanding each patient
• Helps the students to do nursing observation in an organized systematic
way.
• Recognize opportunities for health teaching in hospital.
• Work out a patient care plan to fit the needs of patient
• Understand certain types of apparatus being used on patients.
• Improve the quality of patient care
PHASES
INTRODUCTION PHASE
Purpose of the clinic and Background of the patient were obtained.
Significant observation to be made.
Patient condition.
PATIENT CENTERED PHASE
Questions were asked to the patient and allowed to narrate his problems,Listen to his/her problems and
finally thank the patient.
DISCUSSION –In this phase students are allowed to ask questions about the patients condition and
clarify their doubts regarding the condition.
EVALUATION-
In this phase the students can be evaluated in terms of information collected by them regarding patient
the patients problems,Using of various apparatus for special problems.
ADVANTAGES
• Bedside teaching helps the students to expose to the real active situation.
• Able to Cover a limited group of students.
• Develops qualities of observation and decision making
• Ensures closer contact with reality.
• Permits comparison between reality and theory.

• Enables students to develop self confidence


DISADVANTAGES
• Sometimes puts the patient in difficult situation.
• Poor standardization.
• Narrow limits of utilization
