DURING SEX
PHYSIOLOGY OF HUMAN SEXUAL
RESPONSE

1) Excitement Phase
2) Plateau Phase
3) Sexual Climax
4) Resolution Phase
1) EXCITEMENT PHASE
 caused by the increase in pulse and blood pressure
results to increased skin temperature, flushing and
welling of all distensible body parts, more rapid
breathing, secretion of genital fluids, vaginal expansion
and general increase in muscle tension

 Erection of the penis, vaginal walls become moist, inner

part of the vagina widens
2) PLATEAU PHASE
 More rapid breathing and muscles continue to
tense
 MALE: glands of the head of the penis swells and
the testes enlarge
 FEMALE: outer vagina contracts and the clitoris
retracts
3) SEXUAL CLIMAX OR ORGASM

 Marked by a feeling of abrupt, intense pleasure, a

rapid increase in pulse rate and blood pressure and
spasms of the pelvic muscles causing contractions
of the female reproductive organ and ejaculation
 Involuntary vocalizations
