Barriers Of Communication: 2

 There are a lot of causes of misunderstanding

and misinterpretation of the message
communicated.
 As the process of communication involves
sender, channels and receiver; the problem of
communication usually lies with either one or
more of them.
 There may be certain flaws in encoding and
decoding the message, the channels used may
be defective or faulty.
Classification Of Barriers: 3

 Semantic Barriers
 Physical Barriers
 Organisational Barriers
 Psychological Barriers
Semantic Barriers: 4

Semantic barriers are concerned with

problems and obstructions in the process of
encoding and decoding the message into
words or other impressions. These are :-

 Different Languages
 Poor Vocabulary
 Different Context For Words And Symbols
 Different Languages – This problem is more acute in
culturally diversified organisations and multinationals. 5
Even competent translators fail to convey the exact
meaning of different words of different languages.

 Different Context For Words And Symbols – Words and

symbols used have several meanings depending upon
the context in which they are used.
Give me water to drink.
The water dispute of Punjab and Haryana.

 Poor Vocabulary – If the inappropriate and inadequate

words are used, they will fail to clear the idea to be
communicated.
Physical Barriers: 6

Some of the Physical Barriers are as

follow:
 Noise
 Improper Time
 Distance
 Inadequate Or Overloaded
Information
• Noise - Disturbance between the 7
communication of two persons by the
sound of loud speakers.
• Improper Time - Going to bank after 4:00
p.m or during the lunch time.

• Distance - Person is not in proper network

area.
• Overloaded Information – We should
provide limited information in our resume
to the interviewer.

Observance of rigid rules and regulations
relating to communication causes delay
of message and discouragement to
employees to conveying their creative
and innovative ideas.
• Non Conducting Of Staff Meeting – In
Organisations where Staff meetings and
conferences are missing , free flow of
communication is interrupted.
• Wrong Choice of Channel – Each channel 10
is not ideal and perfect in every situation. If
persuasion is to be made by sales
manager, face to face communication is
more suitable than talking on phone.

difference in hierarchical position , the
greater is the communication gap
between employees and executives.

emotion , social value, different perception
etc

attentively. If they listen they listen selectively.

 Egocentric behaviour: The self centered person think

that there own ideas are more important and others are
wrong.

 Attitude of Superiors: If the superiors are afraid of

delegating authority and lack confidence in themselves as
well as in there subordinates, they will obviously try to conceal,
colour or filter the information.

messages. In broad sense non verbal communication is
communication without the use of written or spoken words
