READING FOR LEARNING

INTRODUCTION

For a good reader, the skill of reading often feels simple, effortless,
and automatic; however, the process of learning to read is
complex and builds on intellectual, linguistic, and social skills
developed from a very early age.
The reading process can be closely connected to the learning
process and thus the quality and depth of knowledge
construction can be impressive when reading.
PREVIEWING BEFORE READING

What is it? Previewing a text means that you get an idea of what it
is about without actually reading the main body of the text.
How it is used: to recall previous knowledge
• set a purpose for reading
• to skim a text before reading
• to look for various features and information that will help later on
When to use it: to help you decide whether a book or journal is useful for your
purpose

• to get a general sense of the article structure

• to help you locate relevant information

• to help you identify the sections of the text you may need to read and the
sections you can omit.

How is it helpful? It saves a lot of time for us as after previewing a text, we can
set a purpose or evaluate whether the text meets our purpose or not. In our
daily life we use the skill of previewing while reading many materials.
To preview, start by reading:
• the title and author details
• the summary
• then read only the parts that ‘jump out’; that is: main headings and sub
headings, chapter summaries, or any highlighted text
• examine any illustrations, graphs, tables or diagrams and their captions,
as these usually summarize the content of large slabs of text
• the first sentence in each paragraph

TEXT MESSAGES: ANNOTATION
What is text annotation? It is the practice and the
result of adding a note to a text, which may
include:
1. highlights/underlining
2. comments
3. footnotes
4. tags and links
How is it useful? Research indicates that
annotating texts causes more in-depth processing
of information, which results in greater recall of
information. It helps the reader keep track of
ideas.
