The Concept of “Dungan” – Spirit or
Soul
 The “soul” or spirit of a person has two dimension:

 Soul referred to as kaluluwa in tagalog and Dungan in Ilonggo
comes from the root word Duwa.
 Dungan is not be seen by the human eye, it takes on a different
form. Ex. Animals
 Bisayans believes that the Dungan leaves the body while the person
is asleep, it can be free from accidents such as getting trapped in a
jar. Only when the soul has safely reunited with the body, the person
will e awake.
 Dungan also connoted as “willpower”. If a person has a strong will, is
it said to have a strong Dungan (Magos, 1986)
