NAME PLATE DETAILS: MOTOR

POWER= HP SPEED= RPM

ARMATURE CURRENT= A FIELD CURRENT= A
ARMATURE VOLTAGE= V FIELD VOLTAGE = V
THEORY:
SWINBURNE’S TEST IS AN INDIRECT METHOD OF TESTING OF DC MACHINES. IN THIS
METHOD THE LOSSES ARE MEASURED SEPARATELY AND THE EFFICIENCY AT ANY DESIRED
LOAD IS PREDETERMINED. MACHINES ARE TESTED FOR FINDING OUT LOSSES, EFFICIENCY
AND TEMPERATURE RISE. FOR SMALL MACHINES DIRECT LOADING TEST IS PERFORMED. FOR
LARGE SHUNT MACHINES, INDIRECT METHODS ARE USED LIKE SWINBURNE’S OR
HOPKINSON’S TEST.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:
Ra(hot)=1.5Ra(cold) [considering 50 degree rise in temperature].
With no load:
Power Input, P0=VI0 Watt
Armature current , Ia0=(I-Ish)A
Armature copper loss, Pa0=Ia02Ra(cold)=(I-Ish)2Ra(cold) Watt
Shunt copper loss, Psh = VIsh Watt
Constant losses, Wc = P0-Pm Watt
Stray losses, Ws =Wc-Psh Watt
With load:
Power Input, P=VI Watt
Armature current , Ia=(I-Ish)A
Armature copper loss, Pa=Ia2Ra(cold)=(I-Ish)2Ra(cold) Watt

Efficiency, n=[(power output x 100)/(power input)]%

=[(power input- loss) x 100/(power input)]%
=(VI-Wc-Pa)/VIx100%
PROCEDURE :

1.Connect the circuit as shown in fig. .Find Ra(cold).

2.Connect the circuit as shown in fig. .Adjust the field regulator to obtain the
rated speed of the motor in no load condition.
3.Note the readings of the voltmeter (V0) and ammeters (I0 and Ish).Calculate
W0 and Ws.
4.Connect the circuit as shown in fig. .Keep the field regulator at the same
position as earlier.
5.Provide different loads and note the corresponding reading of the voltmeter
(V) and ammeter(I and Ish).Calculate efficiency of the motor at different loads.
6.Draw a curve efficiency versus load current (I).
EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS :

SL.NO Voltage Reading(V) Ammeter Reading(A) Ra(cold)=V/I (ohm)

RESULTS:
SWINBURNE’S TEST IS CONDUCTED ON THE GIVEN DC MOTOR
AND THE LOSSES
(CONSTANT AND STRAY) WERE DETERMINED, ALSO THE
EFFICIENCY OF THE MOTOR WAS DETERMINED FOR VARIOUS
LOADS AND WAS PLOTTED AGAINST LOAD CURRENT
PRECAUTIONS:
1. Power must be switched-OFF while making any connections.
2. Do not come in contact with live supply.
3. Power should always be in switch-OFF condition, EXCEPT while
you are taking readings.
4. The Circuit diagram should be approved by the faculty before
making connections.
5. Circuit connections should be checked & approved by the faculty
before switching on the power.
6. Keep your Experimental Set-up neat and tidy.
7. Check the polarities of meters and supplies while making
connections.
8. Always connect the voltmeter after making all other connections.
