INDIRECT SPEECH

In this lesson you will be able to understand
direct and indirect speech. You will also learn
how to change direct to indirect speech and vice
versa. Your macro-skills will surely be
enhanced through this lesson.
This lesson is really significant to you as
young learners because you may apply your
learnings in your daily communication.

Reported speech?
Direct Speech
 The message of the speaker is conveyed or
reported in his own actual words.
 Also known as Quoted Speech.
 It is saying exactly what person had said.
 Uses quotation marks (“ “).
 The verb tenses do not change since we just copy
what the person had said.
Example What?
He said, “I am 12
years old tomorrow.”
I am 12 years
old tomorrow.

“I am 12 years old
tomorrow”, he said.
Example He said, “Let’s have
Let’s have a a birthday party
birthday party tomorrow.”
tomorrow! What?

“Let’s have a

tomorrow,” he said.
Indirect Speech
Also known as reported speech.
It doesn’t use quotation marks.
What the person said doesn’t need to be word for
word.
The message of the speaker is conveyed or
reported in our own ways.
Example What?
I am a game
master.
He said that he
was a game
master.
Example What?
I am tired of
playing ML.
He said that he
was tired of
playing ML.
Message Relay
Mechanics of the activity:
1. Pick one strip of paper.
2. Read the written statement.
3. Change it to direct or indirect. You may write your answer on
the strip of paper.
4. Relay the message to the student next to you.
5. Pass next to you until it reaches the last person.
6. Write the message to the covered area of the blackboard
7. The group to write the correct answer will get 10 points and 5
points for the group participation.
