TYPES OF WAVES
4
Waves are classified into different types according to their
natures :

Wave Types
Mechanical Electromagnetic
e.g. Water waves, waves on a rope, sound e.g. Radio, X-Rays, Light
Must have a substance to travel through Does not need a substance to travel through
but can travel through various substances
Vibrations passed on from molecule to Travel at very fast speed in a vacuum: 3 × 108
molecule m/s

TRANSVERSE
LONGITUDINAL
A wave where the direction of the vibration
is parallel to the
Direction in which the wave travels.
TRANSVERSE WAVES
Transverse waves
A transverse wave is a one in which the
direction of vibration is perpendicular to the
direction of propagation.
Examples
Light waves.
Radio waves.
Waves on a rope.

LONGITUDINAL WAVES
Longitudinal Waves
A longitudinal wave is one in which
the direction of vibration is parallel to
the direction of propagation.
Examples
Sound waves in a solid, liquid or gas.
Compression waves on a spring.
Seismic waves. 11
LONGITUDINAL WAVES

Progressive and
Stationary Wave
( distinguish of those waves )

PROGRESSIVE WAVE
▰ Only the particles other then those at the nodes executes periodic motion.
▰ The phase difference between particles of the medium is same, but
amplitude is different.
▰ The distance between three successive nodes or anti-nodes is called a
wavelength.
▰ In case of a stationary wave, pressure and density remains almost
unchanged at the nodes, while the changes are minimum at the anti-
nodes.
▰ In case of a stationary wave each particle attains its stationary position
twice during one complete vibration.
▰ The equation of a stationary wave is,
