CULTURE
(PERFORMANCES)
We Filipinos are known as music
lovers. Whether it’s on an
international stage or at the
karaoke down the street, we
perform and sing with passion.
Although a majority if the
Original Pinoy Music or OPM,
today is heavily influenced by
American pop music, some
musical artists still use the
traditional instruments that our
pre – Hispanic ancestors used
to make music.
KUBING
 This is a jaw harp made
with bamboo and is one of
the more well known
traditional musical
instruments. It is played by
placing the instruments
between the lips and the
end is plucked to create
different notes and sound,
depending on the tempo
and rhythm of the plucking.
KULINTANG
 It is a set of 5-9 pieces of
gong that varies in size and
sound. They’re aligned
horizontally next to each
other, usually on rack and
are arranged in order of
their pitch. The gong with
the lowest pitch is placed
on the players left side and
2 wooden sticks are used
to hit the gongs to make
sound.
KUDYAPI
 This is the stringed
wooden lute that’s about
4-6 ft. long, it is zither –
like instrument made with
bamboo and is played with
both hands like harp. The
strings are traditionally
made with abaca fiber or
horse hair but the modern
version now uses wires
like guitar.
TONGALI
 It is played to mimic a
mournful human voice.
The flute has 3-4 holes
where the fingers are
placed over. One hole is
found in the back where
air is forced through the
right/left nostril. Another
hole is found about
midway on the flute’s
bottom.
GAMBAL
 Itis used to boost
their warrior’s
esteem and get them
ready for battle. The
drums where made
with hallowed out
tree trunks and deer
skin for drumheads.
DABAKAN
 It is the only non-gong
element in the group. It has
an hour-glass, conical, tubular,
or goblet in shape and is
usually less than 2 ft. tall and
a ft. wide. The body is made
from coconut/jackfruit wood
that’s hollowed out. The
drumhead is made from
deer hide, carabao skin, or
goat skin.
LUNTANG
 It’s strung vertically,
containing 5 horizontal
logs that hang in an
ascending order &
arranged by pitch. To
make sounds, the log
are beaten. It is used to
keep the farmers awake
while scaring birds off
the fields.
BUKTOT
 A small, 4 stringed
guitar like instrument
that’s made from
coconut husk. it is
used for personal
entertainment. It’s
sound similar to
ukelele and is played
alone or with other
instruments.
KULINTANG A TINIOK
 A metallophone that
contains 8 tuned knob
metal plates that are
placed on top of the
wooden rack. A metal
pieces of the
instrument are made
with brass however
modern ones are even
made with tin cans.
BABANDIL
 A single narrowed
rimmed gong is often
used as the
timekeeper. It has a
diameter of about a
foot & has a sunken
boos that has to be
struck on the rim or
flange to make a sharp
metallic clang.
ITIK - ITIK
 The step mimic the way
a duck walks, as well as
the way it splashes
water on its back to
attract a mate. The
dance was created by a
lady named Kanang who
choreographed the
steps while dancing at
the baptismal party.
TINIKLING
 The movements imitate
the movement of the
tikling bird as it walks
around through tall
grass and between tree
branches. The dance
compose of 3 basic
steps which includes
singles, doubles, and
hops.
SAYAW SA BANGKO
 Performed on top of a
narrow bench. Dancers
need good balance as
they go through a
series of movements
that include some
impressive acrobatics.
This dance traces its
roots back to the areas
of Pangasinan.
BINASUAN
 It is an entertaining
dance that is usually
performed at festive
social occasions like
weddings and birthdays.
Dancers carefully balance
three half – filled glasses
of rice wine on their
heads and hands as they
gracefully spin and roll
on the ground.
PANDANGGO SA ILAW
 Performed while
balancing 3 oil lamps –
one on the head, and
one in each hand. It’s a
lively dance that
originated on Lubang
Island. The music is ¾
time and is usually
accompanied by
castanets.
PANDANGGO OASIWAS
 Performed by
fisherman to
celebrate a good
catch. In this version,
the lamps are placed
in cloths or nets and
swung around as the
dancers circle and
sway.
MAGLALATIK
 A mock war dance that
depicts a fight over
coconut meat, a highly
prized food. It is
danced in the religious
procession during the
fiesta of Binan as an
offering to San Isidro
de Labrador, the patron
saint of farmers.
KURATSA
 Dance of courtship
and is often
performed at
weddings and other
social occasions. The
music must becomes
even faster as the man
wins over the woman
with his mating dance.
LA JOTA MONCADENA
 It’s a combination of
Spanish music and Ilocano
dance steps set to
Spanish music and
castanets. A more solemn
version of this dance is
sometimes used to
accompany funeral
procession, but it is also
performs at celebrations.
KAPPA MALONG - MALONG
 Muslim influenced dance
that is tubular garment,
and the dance
essentially shows the
many ways it can be
worn. There are men’s
and women’s versions of
the dance since they
wear malongs in
different ways.
HABANERA BOTOLENA
 Strongly flamenco-
influenced dance that
comes from Botolan,
Zambales. It combines
Filipino and Spanish
steps, and is popular
dance at weddings. It is
also considered a
courting dance in some
situations.
PANTOMINA
 Also known as “dance of
the doves” that mimics
the courtship between
doves and is often also a
courtship dance between
couples that perform it.
This dance is important
part of the Sorsogon
Kasanggayahan Festival
held in October.
CARINOSA
 A dance made for
flirting. Dancers make a
number of flirtatious
movements as they hide
behind fans or
handkerchiefs and peek
out at one another. The
essence of the dance is
the courtship between
two sweethearts.
SURTIDO
 Literally means
“assortment” and this
square dance combines
influences of French
Spanish, and Mexican dance.
It is performed by a head
couple accompanied by 2
other couples who lead all
the dancers through
various formations that
resemble an old-fashioned
quadrille.
SINGKIL
 Traditionally performed by
single women to attract the
attention of potential
suitors. Dancers perform a
series of graceful
movements as they step in
and out from between
bamboo poles which are
rhythmically clapped
together. Fans and scarves
are often used to enhance
the dancer’s movements.
MAGKASUYO
 It is a formal series of close
step close movements with
couple facing each other in
a courtship configuration. It
is a specific invention of
Quezon province, a large
farming and fishing region.
A popular song
“Magkasuyo Buong Gabi”
expands the romantic
nature of the dance.
POLKABAL
 The dance is
composed of nine
different steps which
include various
movements such as
fluttering, stepping hell
– to – toe, a re-
enactment of a bull
fight, and even a
leisurely walk.
