Artificial Intelligence Disruption

Module III
CONTENT
• Introduction to AI

• Various AI Tools

• Problem solving to find the “best” solution in the problem space

• How AI helps to Reason & Interpret to justify solutions or sub-solutions, language comprehension to handle for
data/problem/knowledge representation

• Business decision using AI a process to find better ways for solving a problem or a class of problems

• Application of AI in automobile, health care, retail sector

INTRODUCTION

• Simulation of human intelligence processed by machines, especially computer systems that include learning, reasoning and self-
correction
• Particular applications of include:
– Expert System
– Speech Recognition
– Machine Vision

1. Weak or Narrow AI

• System that is designed and trained for a particular task

• Virtual personal assistants like Apple's Siri

2. Strong AI or Artificial General Intelligence

• System with generalized human cognitive abilities that is able to find a solution without human intervention even when presented
with an unfamiliar task
• AI cloud offerings like Amazon AI, IBM Watson, MS Cognitive Services, Google AI Services

AI TOOLS
PROBLEM SOLVING
• Leveraging AI we could monitor the usage resource, availability resource and have custom-fit
solution

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” -Nelson Mandela

• Some problems are directly linked to the technology available at the moment

 Energy
 Environment
 Transporation
 Food and water
 Disease and Human Suffering
 Education
 Population

• Energy is a large scale financed project that needs to be democratized- the only solution is AI

• Google Deep Mind predicts when its data centres will get too hot
– Cooling systems are only activated when required.
– AI has saved Google around 40% in energy costs at its server farms. https://towardsdatascience.com/what-problems-can-we-solve-

PROBLEM REPRESENTATION

http://webia.lip6.fr/~codognet/PSAI/1-introduction.pdf
KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION

“Intended role of knowledge representation in AI is to reduce

problems of intelligent action to search problems.”

KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION

• Concerned with AI agents thinking and how thinking contributes to

the intelligent behaviour of agents

• Responsible for representing information about the real world

• Can utilise this knowledge to solve the complex real world

problems

• Enables an intelligent machine to learn from that knowledge so that

it can behave intelligently like a human

BUSINESS DECISION
 Today’s AI systems start from zero and feed on a regular diet of big data which is
augmented intelligence in action

 This eventually provides executives with sophisticated models as basis for their
decision-making

 With AI it is possible to analyze a large data, achieve more accurate conclusion, and
reach effective and timely decisions

Marketing Decision-Making

• AI system is able to support decisions through real-time and up-to-date data gathering,
forecasting, and trend analysis

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

• Artificial intelligence within CRM systems enable contact management, data recording
and analyses and lead ranking, and prediction of a CLV

Visualization and Reporting

• Visual and reported data can be analyzed and presented to shareholders which leads to
faster understanding and interpretation

AI IN AUTOMOBILE

a) Self-driving or Driverless Cars

• Combination of computer vision, image recognition and DL

• Google and Tesla are spending millions of dollars on R&D

b) Infotainment System

• Better characteristics like eye tracking, speech recognition, gesture recognition,

monitoring driving, and natural languages

c) Cognitive Capabilities

• Abilities like pattern identification, natural language interpretation and ability to build knowledge
• BMW has partnered with IBM to help vehicles interact with each other

d) Cloud Computing

• Finding gas stations and allowing the driver to pay for their fuel purchase from inside the vehicle
• Providing notes to buy required household items as the driver approaches relevant stores
• GM and IBM https://www.proschoolonline.com/blog/trends-driving-the-automobile-industry
AI IN HEALTHCARE

Improving patient outcomes, Reducing costs, Better and faster diagnoses than humans

a) Managing Medical Records and Other Data

IBM Watson mines patient data to form a hypothesis and presents with a confidence scoring schema

b) Doing Repetitive Jobs

Analyzing tests, X-Rays, CT scans, data entry can all be done faster and more accurately by robots

e) Digital Consultation

Apps like Babylon give medical consultation based on personal medical history

f) Virtual Nurses

The startup Sense.ly has developed a digital nurse Molly to help people monitor patient’s condition

g) Medication Management

AiCure app to monitor the use of medication through a smartphone’s webcam that is partnered with AI

AI IN RETAIL SECTOR
a) Better Data Accumulation

• Create a more personalized shopping experience for the users

• Better predictions can be made using past data and retailers can make better strategic decisions

b) Virtual Trial Rooms

Cosmetic companies can benefit since customers can judge the product without actually applying

c) Digital Assistance

Lowe’s LoweBot is a great example of how robots are improving in-store customer service

d) Chatbots for Customer Support

Burberry and Tommy Hilfiger have launched AI-driven bots on Facebook Messenger that
guide customers through their latest collections and answer their inquiries

e) Cashier-free Stores

• The Amazon Go app along with Just Walk Out Shopping

• Alibaba has used AI in China to launch its first cashier and cash free wine store, Tao Cafe, as well as FutureMart

CONCLUSION

“Most advanced AI tools, are only as smart as the data they

are given in training.”

• Despite numerous applications and data supporting AI,

there are some ethical questions being raised

• Human selects what data should be used for training an AI

program

• The potential for human bias is inherent and must be

monitored closely
