&
INFORMATION
LITERACY
What is MEDIA?
-Refers to the combination of physical
objects used to communicate or mass
media communication through physical
objects, such as radio, television,
computers, telephone, mobile phone,
film and etc.
-Is a source of credible information
- In 70’s and 80’s, Filipino who worked abroad especially in the
middle East sent messages to their families by mail using
postage stamp or by telephone but telephone calls were
expensive especially for overseas calls.
- Other means of communication used before was cassette
tapes
- 21st century, communication became very easy and not so
expensive
- You can send messages now through text
- but some means of communication becomes obsolete like
telegram and some newspapers
Media literacy
- Is understanding and using mass media in either an
assertive or nonassertive way, including an informed
and critical understanding of media, what techniques
they employ and their effect.
- Also the ability to read, analyze, evaluate, and
produce communication in a variety of media forms.
- Ability to decode, analyze, evaluate, and produce
communication in a variety of forms.
Information
• Is a broad term that can cover data, knowledge
derived from study, experience, or instruction,
experience or symbols.
• In the media world, information is often used to
described knowledge of specific events or
situations that has been gathered or received by
communication, intelligence or news.
Information literacy

-Refers to the abilities to recognize


when information is needed and to
locate, evaluate, effectively use, and
communicate information in its
various formats.
- A few centuries ago, when king wants to announce information, a
messenger would go to the public place with a rolled scroll which
was hand written and with a loud voice would read the
announcement.
- But with the discovery of the printing press by the Chinese,
information dissemination became affordable. Books were printed
for mass distribution.
- Later the newspaper was developed to provide information.
- 20th century radio was invented and information as well as events
became easier.
- By the last quarter of 20th century, the new media came and both
young and old were able to access information using the internet
and according to studies, 72% of Internet users are actively engaged
on social media.
Technology
• Is defined as the science industry, engineering &
etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems.
• Through the years, it has galloped over different
phases, from traditional telephones to
smartphones, from transition radio to podcast,
from paper books to electronic books.
Technology literacy

- Is the responsible means of using various


technological tools in order to meet one’s
goals in acquiring and giving the right
information.
- Without knowing such, technology, no
matter how advanced it is, will be
worthless.
EVOLUTION TO
NEW MEDIA
Prehistoric Age
- It was simple compared to how we live now.
- Their only concern before were food, water, shelter and
reproduction and safety from wild animals.
- Medium of communication was through oral language.
- Each group from their tribe has their own language to be
able to communicate (early people developed sound to
make meaningful messages).
How did the early Filipino live?
- Their clothes before was just bahag or G-string for male
and female wore tapis a piece of cloth to cover the lower
part, they don’t have upper clothes.
- When Spaniards arrived, they taught Filipino women to
wore long skirt or saya , kimona and alampay to cover
their shoulder male wore loose camisa chino.
- The house of Filipino was a simple one room affair, the
bahay kubo.
Industrial Age

- Which started in England and other European


countries in 18th century.
- Agricultural and handicraft --- machines and
machines manufacturers.
- This age marked the use of iron and steel,
transportation and communication was developed.
Industrial Age
- Manufacturing industry was secondary industry where
raw materials were processed in factories into consumer
goods & hydroelectric industry & construction industry
were fully utilized.
- During this period printing flourished and education
became mass based.
- Communication were developed like telegraph, radio &
telephone.
Electronic Age
- In 1800, Thomas Alva Edison tried all kinds of
experiments on electricity. He has limited education
background due to his hearing disability.
- At the age of 16 he worked as an apprentice telegrapher
(he created the telegram).
- In 1876, he put up his own laboratory and machine shop
to be able to explore and experiment.
Electronic Age
- He also worked on phonographs as well as
the development of incandescent bulb.
- In 1900, cassette recorder were invented
and Betamax also became popular.
- Television has gone long way, from black
and white TV to colored that can now access
both local and international networks.
New Information Age
- In 1980s, desktop computer arrived in the
Philippines, it was either a big IBM computer or
the Apple desktop.
- In 1998, telephones has evolved into a portable
gadget called cellular phones with heavy
antenna.
- In 2000, cellular phones became more compact
and handy (talk and text gadget with camera).
New Information Age
- In the first decade of the century, computers
introduced with Internet and communication became
so fast and a lot cheaper and portable gadgets were
introduced.
- Now everyone can have an access to the Internet and
it became part of our daily lives. It can be used in
education, business, communication or socialization
and other activities.
