Modern Market : Ayani Mall Traditional Market : Flamboyan

Now, suppose that the market and the mall are "natural resource" that have many elements (goods), which
of you would prefer/which place is easier to find element?

How are the properties of the

elements, same or different?

if you are a chemist what

would you do so the elements
would be easy to learn?

DEVELOPMENT OF PERIODIC SYSTEM
Johann Dobereiner (1892) classified elements based on similarities in
Triade Dobereiner properties. Each group consist of three elements, which are called Dobereiner
triads.

John Newlands (1865) classified elements based on the increasing atomic

Octaves Newlands mass. Because a repeating trend of properties occurs every eight element, it is
called Law of octaves.

Dmitri Mendeleev (1969) classified elements based on the increasing atomic

Mendeleev’s System mass and the periodic repetition of the properties. Element with similar properties
Periodic are assigned in column called “groups”, while periodic repetition of properties
produces rows caleed “periods”.

Modern System H.G.J Moseley classified elements based on the increasing atomic number and
Periodic similarities in properties of element, which produce repetition of properties in
the form of periods and similarities in properties in the form of groups.
ELEMENTAL PERIODIC PROPERTIES
Distance from nucleus to the outermost shell.
Atomic Radius a. The atomic radius decrease across a period
b. The atomic radius increase down a group

Energy required to remove an electron of an atom.

Ionization energy (IE) a. The ionization energy increase across a period
b. The ionization energy decrease down a group

Energy involved when an atom receives one electron to form a negative ion.
Electron Affinity (EA) a. The electron affinity increase across a period
b. The electron affinity decrease down a group

A measure of the ability of an atom to attract electrons in a chemical bond

Electronegativity a. The electronegativity increase across a period
b. The electronegativity decrease down a group
