According to Max Weber,
Conflict- arises when one person or party
intentionally carries out an action or deed
against another party.

Major Causes:
-Greed
-Grievance
ETHNIC CONFLICTS- conflicts
brought about issues of identity and
ethnicity.

EXAMPLES:
Ethnic conflict in Assam
Sikh-Hindu conflict in Punjab
The Hindu-Muslim Problem
Causes of Ethnic Conflicts:

• Structural factors
• Political factors
• Economic and social factors
• Cultural or perceptual factors
• Proximate causes
• Internal mass-level factors
• External mass-level factors
RELIGIOUS CONFLICTS- brought about
by religious differences.

EXAMPLES:
Crusades in Christian Europe and the
Muslim-controlled Middle East region
The Thirty-Years War
Causes of Religious Conflicts:

• Beliefs
• Politics
• Economic interests
• Community interests
• Exploitation
• Ideology
IDEOLOGICAL CONFLICTS- brought
about by disparities in certain belief or views.

EXAMPLES:
Ideological conflict in the Cold War
Struggle of the Communist Party of the
Philippines
3 main strands of Competing Ideologies:

Liberalism
Individualism, freedom, equality, quality,
toleration, consent, constitutionalism.
It is in a sense the ideology of industrialized
west.
Faith in reason is also a central component
Conservatism
Tradition, pragmatism, human imperfection, organicism,
hierarchy, authority,property.
Society is hierarchical, and that authority develops
naturally.
Humans beings are imperfect; thus they will need
stability and security.
Emphasize on family, friends, colleagues, local,
community, and the nation.
Socialism
Community, fraternity, social equality, need,
social class, common ownership.
Reaction to industrial capitalism and became
associated with the interests of the growing
working class.
Abolish the capitalist market economy and
replace it with a society constructed on the
basis of common ownership.
Ways to achieve peaceful resolution of conflict

Peacemaking- a non-restrictive list of peaceful,


diplomatic, and judicial means of resolving
disputes.
Peacekeeping- is situated before peace
enforcement and before the sanctions regime.
Peacebuilding- has a broad post-conflict
agenda and more than an instrumentalist method
to secure peace.
MIGRATION
Is the movement of people from one place
to another for the purpose of temporary or
permanent residence
TYPES OF MIGRATION:
• Emigration/ Out-migration- is the relocation of people
from their own country to reside in another
• Immigration- is the international movement of people to a
destination country of which they are not natives or where
they do not possess citizenship
• Internal migration/Domestic migration- movement of
people within their own country (transferring from one city
or locality to another)
Causes of Migration
• Employment opportunities/Lack of
opportunities
• Better education
• Globalization
• Natural disaster (flood and drought)/
Climate change
IMPACTS OF MIGRATION
Positive Impact
• Unemployment is reduced and people get better job opportunities.
• Migration helps in improving the quality of life of people.
• It helps to improve social life of people as they learn about new
culture, customs, and languages which helps to improve
brotherhood among people.
• Migration of skilled workers leads to a greater economic growth of
the region.
• Children get better opportunities for higher education.
• The population density is reduced and the birth rate decreases.
Negative Impact
• The loss of a person from rural areas, impact on the level
of output and development of rural areas.
• The influx of workers in urban areas increases competition
for the job, houses, school facilities etc.
• Having large population puts too much pressure on natural
resources, amenities and services.
• Many migrants are completely illiterate and uneducated,
therefore, they are not only unfit for most jobs, but also
lack basic knowledge and life skills.
• Poverty makes them unable to live a normal and healthy
life.
• Children growing up in poverty have no access to
proper nutrition, education or health.
• Migration increased the slum areas in cities which
increase many problems such as unhygienic
conditions, crime, pollution etc.
• Sometimes migrants are exploited.
• Migration is one of the main causes of increasing
nuclear family where children grow up without a
wider family circle.
