The Effects of Sleep

to the Senior High


School Students.

Introduction
 Sleep is a basic necessity of life. The current 24-hour society, we use precious nightmare
hours for daytime activities. We have reduced the average sleep time by 20% and, in
the past 25 years, added a month to the average annual work time (National Sleep
Foundation, 1999). The sleep habits of students has changed but the bodies of
individuals have not.
 You’d have to be severely sleep-deprived not to see evidence of the new sleep
revolution. Everywhere you look there articles about the benefits of sleep and the
downsides of lack of sleep, tips on how to get more sleep and new devices to help us
disconnect to sleep and then monitor and track different stages of sleep. Though the
need for sleep has been a constant throughout human history, now we feel about it has
gone through dramatic changes over years. We’re now in the process of renewing our
estranged relationship, especially as science, in the last two decades or so, has
validated much of the ancient wisdom about the important of sleep.

 Our modern definition of success is largely responsible for the devaluation of sleep; it’s also why
sleep has ccome to be valued once aagain—but often for a limited set of reasons. As
researchers continue to fill in the gaps about what exactly is going on biologically while we
sleep, we need to also regain the deeper connection with ourselves that sleep can bring us
every night.
 Sleep is a periodic reversible state of cognitive and sensory disengagement from the external
environment that is essential for rest, repair, well-being and survival. Normal sleep consists of 4-6
cycles of 90-100 minutes periods with cycles of REM and NONREM sleep (Kamdar, Needham
and Collop 2012 studies of normal subjects show sleep deprivation negatively affects
ventilatory, circulatory, immunologic, hormonal, and metabolic stability. Sleep deprivation also
impacts a person’s ability to perform physical activities and affects cognitive function as
evidenced by delirium, depression and other phychiatric impairment.
 Several sleep-related factors can affect an individual’s ability to stay alert and perform a task
safety and completely.The first is the number of hours that person has been continuously
awake with each hour with each hour of wakefulness, the drive to sleep increases and
alertness fades. Another common factor is insufficient sleep on regular basis, also known as
chronic sleep deprivation. Scientist have found that a small nightly decrease in sleep has

 According to the repair and restoration theory of sleep, sleeping is essitial for
revitalizing and restoring the physiological processes that keep the body and
mind healthy and properly functioning. This theory suggest that NREM sleep is
important for restoring physiological functions, while REM sleep is essential in
restoring mental functions.
 This theory is further supported by the fact that certain genes only switch on
during sleep. Sleep also allows us to physically heal our bodies. This is marked by
the constant growth and repair of body’s immune and nervous systems, as well
as our muscles and bones.
Conceptual Framework
 Sleeping is a basic human need, like eating, drinking and
breathing. Like these other needs, sleeping is a vital part of the
foundation for good health and well-being through-out your
lifetime. Sleep deficiency can lead to physical and mental
health problems, injuries, loss of productivity, and even a
greater risk of death.
Statement of the Problem
General Statement
 This study will determine the effects of sleep to the Senior high school students.
1. What are the profile of the respondents in terms of:
1.1. Hobby,
1.2. Addiction, and
1.3. Work
2. What are the factors that affect the selection of the effects of sleep to the senior high
school students in terms of:
2.1. Academic Performance,
2.2.
2.3.
3. Is there a significance on the effects of sleep to the senior high
school students to the perception of the respondents?
Assumptions

 There are various confounding variables that relate to the study. Since a large
part of the information obtained for the study is through self-report, we assume
that all of the senior students will fill-out any logs or questionnaires with honestly
and integrity. Also, we are looking at academic performance; therefore we
must assume that the quality of teaching is the same with all of th4 senior
students.
Hypothesis

 Although the review of literature revealed a discrepancy, the


majority of articles describe partial sleeping less than 5 hours in
one 24-hours period as having negative effects on cognitive,
behavioral, physiological, and emotional measure will effect
productivity. Therefore, it is hypothesized that partial sleep and
productivity have a negative correlation. Productivity is
defined as the percent of tasks completed daily on the task
log sheet.
Scope and Delimitations

 Today, an overwhelming majority of senior high school students are


not getting enough sleep. This lack of sleep is a serious problem,
especially as students are doing more than ever with their time. They
come to school early, spend hours listening to teachers and taking
tests, then run off to practices and meetings, and come home to be
faced with even more work and the homework load these days is
not light, teacher assign hours worth of homework each night. Our
nation’s teenagers just as much as they did when they were
younger and they are simply not getting this much needed rest.

 General Purpose to determine if their significant effect of sleep in


every student, on their education
Significance of the study
 The significance of this study is that it affects all walks of life. Sleep less knows no
boundaries. It cuts across all caltural, social, economic, religious, educational, ethics,
racial, gender and age lines. Million of american are suffering from daytime sleepless so
pervarive that it interferes with their daily activities maintain Thomas Roth, health and
science advisor, National Sleep Foundation NSF. “This trend in daytime sleepiness should
raise concerns among partners, health care professionals, educators, safety experts, and
employers, lack of sleep and sleep problems can have serious, life-threatening
consequences as well as a significance impact on productivity sleep loss is an issue that
everyone should be aware of whether you are an employer looking out for the safety of
your employees or a mother concerned for the welfare, growth and development of
your child. Whether you, your relative, or your friend suffers from sleep loss, it is an issue
that is linked to every aspects of your life.
