According to the repair and restoration theory of sleep, sleeping is essitial for
revitalizing and restoring the physiological processes that keep the body and
mind healthy and properly functioning. This theory suggest that NREM sleep is
important for restoring physiological functions, while REM sleep is essential in
restoring mental functions.
This theory is further supported by the fact that certain genes only switch on
during sleep. Sleep also allows us to physically heal our bodies. This is marked by
the constant growth and repair of body’s immune and nervous systems, as well
as our muscles and bones.
Conceptual Framework
Sleeping is a basic human need, like eating, drinking and
breathing. Like these other needs, sleeping is a vital part of the
foundation for good health and well-being through-out your
lifetime. Sleep deficiency can lead to physical and mental
health problems, injuries, loss of productivity, and even a
greater risk of death.

Assumptions
There are various confounding variables that relate to the study. Since a large
part of the information obtained for the study is through self-report, we assume
that all of the senior students will fill-out any logs or questionnaires with honestly
and integrity. Also, we are looking at academic performance; therefore we
must assume that the quality of teaching is the same with all of th4 senior
students.
