Rational numbers

A number that can be made by dividing two integers (an integer

is a number with no fractional part).
Examples :
1 3 10
• , , is a rational number
2 4 7
• 0.75 , 0.2 , 0.010 is a rational number
1 3 3
• 1 , 2 , 10 is a rational number
2 4 5
• etc
Fractions

We can describe numbers smaller than one by using decimals or fractions. Today,
most systems use decimals, but it is still useful to know how to read and say simple
fractions in English.
There are 2 elements in fraction numbers

1 The numerator

2 The Denominator
Some fraction are spelled by following conventions
1 1 3
= A half , = A quarter , = Three Quarter
2 4 4

Or we can spelled a fraction number by spelling its denominator into ordinal

numbers
1 2 3
= one fifth , = two third , = Three ninth
5 3 9
Examples

This is example how we read fractions in mathematics

3 2 5
+ =
4 3 7
As we read
Three quarters plus two third equals five seventh
4 2 8
𝑥 =
5 5 5
As we read
Four fifth times two fifth equals eight fifth
Mixed Numbers

A mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a fraction.

1 The numerator
The number
1
4 The Denominator
its spelled like fraction numbers, just theres additional before read the fraction
Example :

1 1
1 = one and a quarter 2 = two and a half
4 2
OR
1 6
2 = two one fifth , 5 = five six seventh
5 7
Examples

This is example how we read mixed numbers in mathematics

1 1 5
1 +4 = 5
2 3 6
As we read
one and a half plus four one third equals five five sixth

3 1 4
3 −1 =2
5 3 15
As we read
three three fifth minus one one third equals two four fifteenth
Decimals

A decimal number is a number with a decimal point in it, like these examples

0.1 12.751 105.5

0.021
80.35
0.75

21.6 0.1075

-11.75 120.7511 -0.125

To indicate a decimal number we use a point (.). And we spelled decimals by
saying its “point”
example
0.8 = zero point eight
1.5 = one point five
20.55= twenty point fifty five,
100.91= a hundred point ninenty one
Warning Advice

A point symbol ( . ) is for mentioning decimal, but a comma ( , ) is for mentioning

nominals. So be careful !
example :

10.175 ≠ 10,175
Ten point one hundred Ten thousand one hundred
seventy five seventy five
Another advice

Be careful when you meet like this

2.05 ≠ 2.5
Remember to mention a number after “point” first. Dont misspelled and misread it
because it will lead to misleading information
Two point zero five
≠ Two point five
Examples

This is example how we read decimals in mathematics

0.5 + 2.75 = 3.25

As we read
Zero point five plus two point seventy five equals three
point twenty five
50.835 𝑥 2.5 = 127.0875
As we read
Fifty point eight hundred thirty five times two point five equals one
hundred twenty seven point zero eight hundred seventy five
