BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 Slang is a symbol or uniqueness of a particular group of people or community which is marked with their creativity
toward language.
 Matiello (2008) described slang as a variety that contains profanity, shows informality, and creates group
restrictions.
 Holmes (1992: 16) says that the sociolinguistic’s objective is to move towards a theory which provides a motivated
account of the way language is used in a community, and of the choices people make when they use language.
 This study focused on what type and context of slang in African American slang and how the culture of the society
affects their language that represented in Barbershop: The Next Cut.

 Research Method : Descriptive Qualitative method

 Research Instrument : The types of data is transcript and the utterance that showed up in some scenes of
Barbershop: The Next Cut movie.
 Sources : Movie entitled Barbershop: The Next Cut and some videos and research that related to the
topic, which is slang and African-American language.
 Data Collection : Firstly the researcher collect the transcript from official website that give the official
transcript of the movie in detail. Then, crop some scenes that will be analysed by the
researcher according to the transcript of the movie.
 Data Analysis : Data analysis techniques are adjusted to the research objectives.
