Art Appreciation
Visual Arts

 The visual arts are art forms that create works that are
primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing,
painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts,
photography, video, film making and architecture.

 Modern techniques, processes, and procedures includes

graphic design, multimedia art, modeling, different way of
handling of color pigment and printing by the use of
specified technology.
2D and 3D

Aspects of 2D & 3D

 Visual/Film Animation
2D and 3D
 Dimensions are used to describe the structure of an object —
whether it's flat or not — and its extent in space. A dimension in
geometry is defined as the number of coordinates needed to
specify a point on the object.
 2 – Dimensional refers to an object, image, or animation which
only has the height and width, (without depth); therefore, two
dimensional objects are flat.
 3 – Dimensional is something that has width, height and depth
(length).

SHAPES

 Plane shapes are those that can be drawn on the flat surfaces.
Furthermore, it is also known as the 2-dimensional or 2D shape.
Ex.:
 Solid shapes have three measurements: the length, breadth (depth),
and height. Moreover, it is also known as 3-dimensional or 3D
shape.

Visual/Film Animation
 The easiest way to explain the difference between 2D and 3D
animation is by using examples of animations you’ve probably seen
before:
• Looney Tunes (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd)
An example of 2D animation
• Classic Disney (Snow White, The Jungle Book, The Little
Mermaid)
• TV shows (The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, Rick and
Morty)
2D animation is a traditional animation method that has existed
since the late 1800s. It is one drawing followed by another in a
slightly different pose, followed by another in a slightly different
pose, so on and so on, at 24 frames per second.

Visual/Film Animation
 Some popular 3D animations include:
• Pixar (Toy Story, Frozen, The Incredibles)
• Dreamworks (Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon) Example of a 2D animated globe vs.
a 3D animated globe
• Feature Film CGI (the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the robots in
Transformers, pretty much everything in Avatar)
• 3D animation (aside from stop-motion, which can actually be
either 2D or 3D animation) is completely done using software.
• Anything created in a 3D animation program exists in an X, Y, Z
world. That means instead of a flat drawing of a globe, 3D
animation produces a sphere that can actually rotate 360
degrees. An example of 3D animation
Digital Arts & Analogue
FILM
 Also called movie or motion picture, is a visual art
used to simulate experiences that communicate ideas,
stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by
the means of recorded or programmed moving images
along with other sensory stimulations.
 The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often
used to refer to filmmaking and the film industry, and to
the art form that is the result of it.
 The moving images of a film are created by
photographing actual scenes with a motion-picture
camera, by photographing drawings or miniature models
using traditional animation techniques, by means of CGI
and computer animation, or by a combination of some
or all of these techniques, and other visual effects.
Digital Arts
 Film Analogue
 Film photography is photography that uses a chemical process
based (e.g., photographic film or plate) recording medium.
Digital Arts
 Digital art is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology
as part of the creative or presentation process. Since the 1970s,
various names have been used to describe the process, including
computer art and multimedia art. Digital art is itself placed under the
larger umbrella term new media art.
 CGI (Computer Generated Imagery)
 VFX (Visual Effects/Visual FX)

Digital Arts
 CGI (Computer Generated Imagery)
 The term 'CGI animation' refers to dynamic CGI rendered as a movie.
The term virtual world refers to agent-based, interactive
environments. Computer graphics software is used to make
computer-generated imagery for films, etc.
Digital Arts
 VFX (Visual Effects/Visual FX)
 Visual effects involve the integration of live action footage, inanimate
objects, characters or creatures in able to look more realistic,
expensive, and time consuming in sort of creating a film. Visual effects
using computer-generated imagery (CGI) have recently become
accessible to the independent filmmaker with the introduction of
affordable and easy-to-use animation and compositing software.
Digital Arts
 SFX (Special Effects/ Special FX)
 Special effects (often abbreviated as SFX, SPFX, F/X or simply FX)
are illusions or visual tricks used in the theatre, film, television, video
game and simulator industries to simulate the imagined events in a
story or virtual world.
Trivia
 The first film ever made was the Roundhay Garden Scene (1888)
by the French inventor Louis Le Prince which last for about 2.11
seconds but yet, it is technically a movie.
 Logistics or Logistics Art Project - longest film ever made which
has a running time of 857 consecutive hours or 35 days and 17
hours.
Performance Art
 Performance art is a performance presented to an audience within a
fine art context, traditionally interdisciplinary. Performance may be
either scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated,
spontaneous or otherwise carefully planned with or without audience
participation.
