Growth Performance of Eggplant

(Solanum melongena) in
Organic, Inorganic and Mixed
Fertilizers Intercropped with
Mungbean (Vigna radiata)
OBJECTIVES
• To determine the effect of organic,
inorganic and mixed fertilizers in the
growth performance of eggplant and
mungbean.
DATA GATHERED
 Plant height
 no. of leaves
 leaf length and width
METHODOLOGY
1. Land Preparation
The assigned area to the students were cleaned
by removing the grasses and weeds around it. The
land was cultivated with the use of grab hoe and
shovel to loosen the soil for planting and levelled it
using a rake. The experiment was laid out following
a Randomized Complete Block Design. Eggplant
and mungbean were planted in each treatment with
three blocks. The different treatments are as follows:
T1 – Organic Fertilizern (Compost), T2 –
Combination of Oraganic and Inorganic (Compost
+ Complete) Fertilizer, T3 –Inorganic Fertilizer
(Complete).
Land Preparation
2. Planting
The eggplant seedlings were planted first. Each
block had 15 seedlings with a planting distance of
75cm per hill. Mungbeans were planted after two
weeks when the eggplants were grown and it was
planted beside the main cop.
3. Applying fertilizers and Maintenance
In treatment 1, two sacks of compost were
added. 1 sack of compost and 150grams of
synthetic fertilizer triple 14 was added in
treatment 2. And in treatment 3, 250grams of
synthetic fertilizer triple 14 was added. In each
eggplant, 2 grams of complete fertilizer were
applied. The synthetic fertilizer was dissolved
in water first before applying for its fast
absorption.
Weeds were removed for the maintenance
of each block to avoid competition of nutrients
for them to grow faster.
WEEDING
Gathering Data

Plant height, leaf length and width

were measured with the use of
meter stick. Number of leaves
were gathered through counting.

DISCUSSION

• Based on the result obtained in the

study, it turned out that treatment 1
which was added with organic fertilizer
had the tallest growth in terms of plant
height, had the greatest number of leaves
and had the longest and widest leaf in
terms of its leaf length and width.

TREATMENT PLANT HEIGHT

T1 ORGANIC 31

T2 MIXED 28.5

T3 INORGANIC 29

LEAVES LEAF LEAF

T1 ORGANIC

T2 MIXED
8 6.5cm 4cm

T3
INORGANIC
8 7cm 4cm
DISCUSSION

In mungbean, based on the result of the

gathered data, treatment 1 had the tallest
growth compared to the other treatments while
on the number of leaves they had the same
result and in terms of length of the leaf,
treatment 1 had also the longest leaf compared
to the other treatments while on its width all
the treatments had the same result.
CONCLUSION
Organic fertilizer had a significant effect
on the vegetative growth of eggplants
expressed by their height, number of
leaves and in length and width of the
leaves compared to the other treatments.
Organic fertilizers like compost add new
organic matter to the soil and contribute
to the maintenance of physical fertility,
and result in better soil moisture status.
