AWARENESS TO SOCIAL MEDIA IN

COMMUNICATION AND APPLICATION TO THE


USAGE OF THE SELECTED COLLEGE OF ARTS
AND SCIENCE STUDENTS IN CALAYAN
EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION INCORPORATED

Introduction
The study of the Awareness to Social Media in Communication and Application to the usage
of the selected College of Arts and Science Student in Calayan Educational Foundation
Incorporated were in a way of socialize with other people and can communicate with
people they know in real-life through social networking sites.
Social media in Communication has become an effective and efficient way to communicate
and stay connected to the people that build a strong social relationship in everyday livings.
Social media in Application can utilize the individual to interact through the use of network
with a sustainable activities within the apps they tend to use such as photo sharing,
blogging, video sharing, business network, virtual network and many more. The use of
various social media application to network career opportunities, find people across the
globe with like interests and share their thoughts, feelings, insight and emotions. It is a way
of engaging the measure of public share, likes, comment, followers and subscribers from
the channel of Social media.

Objectives
The study aim to discuss the Awareness to Social Media in
Communication and Application to the Usage of the selected College
of Arts and Science Students in Calayan Educational Foundation
Incorporated. Specifically it seek to answer the following questions:
1. How effective to use Social Media in Communication and
Application to the usage for students?
2. What effect does Social Media in Communication and Application
have?
3. What Social Network does Social Media in Communication and
Application are used?

Literature Review
(Kaplan and Haenlein 2010, p. 61). Social media “is a group of Internet-based
applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web
2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user generated content”

(Gomez, Roses & Farias, 2012). Social networks have changed the way people
communicate, the interaction they have and ability to create and share
information with the rest of the world, becoming a daily occurrence.

(Kwon & Yixing, 2010). Social network foster the maintenance, development and
creation of interpersonal relationship based on the elaboration of a personal
profile in which accessible information is published and shared by all who are
present on the social network.

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
Descriptive research design

Population and Sample


The respondents were chosen systematic sampling method
which are the 20 selected College of Arts and Science Students in
Calayan Educational Foundation Incorporated. The study are
divided into equal number of population of the respondent were 10
Female and 10 Male.

Part 1. Demographic Profile of the respondent according to Gender.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
After tallying and analyzing the data gathered from the respondents, the following findings are
derived.
1. Based on the demographic profile of the respondent, 50% were both female and male. Most of
them were ages between 18-24 years old
2. The lowest range scale is 2.9 which is the “Do you believe that social media can sheer the
number of people that can interact with” and the highest range scale is 3.65 were “Social Media
ca easy to communicate to friends, family abroad or not and to one another”. The result of
effective use in communication of social media has a weighted mean of 3.26 with verbal
description of Strongly Agree.
3. The highest range scale is 3.6 which is the “Share opinion, ideas and information”, “Share
status, photos, funny videos and see updates”, and “Information Sight for updates in public
news such showbiz, weather and also political news”. While the lowest range scale indicate 2.25
which is the “Use in online shop for an item product”. The result of effective use in application
of social media has a weighted mean of 3.28 with verbal description of Strongly Agree.

4. The lowest range scale is 3.05 were “Change in talking style such the used of words SWAG, LOL, and
OMG” and “People who remain busy using social media do not find time for learning new communication
skill”. While the highest range scale is 3.3 which is the “Social media also challenges our communication
etiquette. People too say whatever come to mind without thinking about how the receiver will interpret their
tone and intent. It has created more misunderstanding and miscommunication which threaten the relationship”
and “Do you believe that social media can also adopt an effect to a people who talked less in face to face
communication”. The result of effect use in communication of social media has a weighted mean of 3.16 with
verbal description of Agree.

5. The lowest range scale is 2.95 were “Education are affected cause by daily used of social media”. While the
highest range scale is 3.5 which is the “In social media can also have a poser”. The result of effect use in
application of social media has a weighted mean of 3.15 with verbal description of Agree.

6. Social Network in communication the most used by the students is “Messenger” with a weighted mean of
4.65 and verbal description of Always. Social Network in communicated has a weighted mean of 2.28 with
verbal description of Rarely.

7. Social Network in Application has a weighted mean of 3.17 with verbal description of Sometimes. The most
use in application are “Facebook”, “Google”, “YouTube” and “Instagram”
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the findings on this study, the following conclusions were drawn:
1. The respondent in College of Arts and Science were female and male
with an equal level of participation to the study wherein most of them were
18-24 years old for female and 18-21 years old were male. The study
conducted in Calayan Educational Foundation Incorporated to the selected
respondent student from the course of BS Psychology, AB Economics and AB
Comm.
2. College of Arts and Science for every course are aware in Social Media
by the effective and effect used.
3. It is revealed that the gender of the student has significant difference
on the social media in communication and application to the usage were the
weighted mean are shows from the effective and effect used of social media.

RECOMMENDATIONS
In the light of the findings and conclusions of the study, the researcher recommends
the following:
The student should be aware from the used of Social media and Social
Network were the safety is always ahead to avoid misfortune for the self and should
be more productive and knowledgeable from using social media.

It is recommended that the student and other user of social media to know
the good and bad side when using social media in communication and application.
This will be useful for the youth to be more aware from what social media and
network is and what social media has wherein the effective and effect of social
media are indicate.
The Future Researcher must show another purpose about social media for
the youth people nowadays as they use in everyday livings.
