MULTICULTURAL

MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY
• Multicultural society is talk about the people of the country, nation, region,
even limited geographical locations such as cities or cities school, which
consists of people who have different cultures in the equality. In essence, a
multicultural society is a society consisting of various kinds of tribes each
has a different cultural structure.
MULTICULTURALISM
• Multiculturalism interpreted as politics used to approve human rights and
equality of citizens as responses to his opinions on group differences, such
as ethnic Africans, ethnic minority groups, women, gays and so on.
• According to Mahrus, M., & Muklis, M. (2015) Indonesia is a multicultural
society. This matter proven in Indonesia has many ethnic groups, each of
which has a cultural structure different. This difference can be seen from
differences in language, customs, religion, type of art, and others
Cultural society can be interpreted as follows (Gunawan, K., & Rante, Y. 2011)
(1) Recognition of various differences and complexities of life in society.
(2) The same treatment of various communities and cultures, both the majority
or minority.
(3) Equality in diversity and diversity, both individually or in groups and culture.
(4) High respect for human rights humans and mutual respect in differences.
(5) The elements of togetherness, cooperation and life
side by side peacefully in difference.
The diversity of cultural structures in society makes multiculturalism
divided into several forms
(Hasan, A. M. (2016) and Mubit, R. (2016))
(1) Isolation Multiculturalism.
Public this type usually runs an autonomous life and is involved in interactions that
know one another to each other. The groups basically accept diversity, but at the same
time trying to maintain their culture separately from other communities in general.
Example
Kajang tribal community in Bulukumba Regency is still isolating themselves and
maintain their culture from outside cultures, but still accept the diversity of the
community in addition their society seems to continue to interact with other
communities.
(2) Accommodative Multiculturalism.
This society has a dominant culture, which makes certain adjustments and
accommodations for the cultural needs of minorities. Accommodating
multicultural society formulate and apply culturally sensitive laws, laws and
provisions, and giving freedom to minorities to develop / maintain their
culture. Conversely, minorities do not oppose dominant culture.
For example the Javanese tribe in Palopo area.
(3) Autonomous multiculturalism.
The main cultural groups trying to realize equality (equality) with the dominant
culture and want an autonomous life in a political framework that is collectively
acceptable. The main principles of life in multicultural groups of this type is to
maintain their way of life, each of which has the same rights as the dominant
group. They also oppose the dominant group and trying to create a society
where all groups can exist as equal partners.
• For example, feminist groups fighting for gender equality.
• (4) Multiculturalism Critical / Interactive.
This type of multiculturalism occurs in plural societies where groups are what
exists is actually not so demanding of an autonomous life, but rather demands
the creation of culture collective that confirms their distinctive perspectives.
The dominant group in it certainly refused, even tried to forcibly apply their
dominant culture with sacrifice the culture of minority groups
• (5) Cosmopolitan Multiculturalism.
Life in this type of multiculturalism is trying to erase all kinds of cultural
boundaries to create a society that every individual is no longer bound to
certain culture. It could also be the other way around, where each individual is
free with cross-cultural lives or develop each other's cultural life.
For example life in the city of Makassar coexist with a different culture.
Building a harmonious and united multicultural society, there are
several values that must be avoided

(1) Primordialism.
Primordialism means tribal feelings excessive. Considering his own superior tribe, advanced, and good. On
one side primordialism is a good thing because it essentially wants to preserve the culture that is in place the
individual was born, but also this attitude is not good to be developed in a multicultural society like Indonesia
because it is a form of embryo conflict, if this attitude is present in the citizens a nation, and they are less likely
to accept the existence of other ethnic groups.
• Examples consider the Makassar tribe better than the Toraja.
(2) Ethnocentrism.
Ethnocentrism means attitudes or views based on the community and its own culture, usually accompanied with
attitudes and views that underestimate society and other cultures because they think that the culture is better by
using one's own culture.
Example provides good language based on one's own language
(3) Discriminatory.
Discriminative is an attitude discriminates the treatment of fellow citizens based on skin color,
class, ethnicity nation, economy, religion and others. This attitude is very dangerous to develop
because it can trigger the emergence of antipathy towards fellow citizens, such as differences in
treatment between the poor and rich people in getting health services.
(4) Stereotypes.
Stereotypes are conceptions of nature a group based on subjective and incorrect bias.
Indonesia does have ethnic diversity and each ethnic group has characteristics. Not right when
the difference that we exaggerate to form a hatred or stereotype for such tribes stereotypes for
the Makassar tribe as a rough tribe, even though not everyone has a Makassar tribe are rude
people, there are those who have gentle souls.
