ACTIVITY-BASED MODULAR INSTRUCTION
IN ENRICHING POSITIVE ATTITUDE
TOWARDS LEARNING SCIENCE

SDO-BILIRAN QUALITATIVE ACTION RESEARCH

CONTEXT/RATIONALE

Science is one of the major content areas of the general

education curriculum on which the educational reform
movement has focused. However, during the Learning Action
Cell of the Science teachers, they noted that the indifference
and negative attitude of the students in this learning area such
as lack of interest, inattentiveness, and truancy are due to
complexity of the lesson, complicated activities, and less-varied
strategies used by subject-teachers.

Science teaching requires a wide variety of instructional
materials to aid students’ learning and to improve their attitude towards
the subject. As cited by Reiser et al (2002), learning materials can also
serve as a primary influence on how teachers should teach science in a
more meaningful way; thus, making every lesson enjoyable for students
to grasp.

Pine (2014) mentioned that in an activity-based teaching,

learners enthusiastically internalize and implement concepts relevant to
their needs. Mastropiere and Scruggs (1994) noted that many students
benefit from learning science through activities-oriented approach that
reduces reliance on textbooks and pencil-and-paper tests.

The purpose of this action research is to enrich students’
positive attitude in Science subject using the activity-based modular
instruction. It involves identified Grade 9 students who demonstrate
negative attitude towards the subject such as disinterest, apathy,
inattentiveness, and the “no-care syndrome” of the current school
year. It is to help learners master a competency-based skill which they
were not able to develop during the regular classroom teaching.
Because of those prevailing manifestations, the researchers are
determined to unveil the perceptions of the students in enriching their
positive attitude in Science through activity-based modular instruction.

ACTION RESEARCH QUESTION:

This action research aims to answer the question:

How can activity-based modular

instruction enrich students’ positive
attitude in Science subject?

PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY

To enrich students’ attitude towards learning, a teacher made

module with simplified activities in Science 9 will be used. Science
teachers will convene, brainstorm and decide on the content anchored
from the Learner’s Material. The activities will be customized,
contextualized and simplified designed to arouse students’ interest in
the subject, thus attitude in learning is enriched. This learning module
will be implemented in 2nd and 3rd quarter of the current school year.
Identified students will use the module during Remedial
Reinforcement Enhancement (RRE) schedule facilitated by the teacher.

PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY

Students will have to report regularly during the weekly

session and attendance will be recorded, anecdotal record will
be used, students’ activity per session will be checked and
teacher will give an input to clear out misconceptions and will
help students deepen the concept. At the end of the two
quarters, the teacher will have to determine results through
observation and in depth interview of the students.

ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

a. Participants and/or other sources of data or information

The participants of the study will be the Grade 9
Science students at Naval School of Fisheries SY: 2018 – 2019
who demonstrate negative attitude towards the subject.

b. Data Gathering Methods

This study will utilize observation and in-depth
interview with the participants of the study.

ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

c. Data Analysis Plan

Data obtained from observation will be analyzed
using frequency count. While thematic analysis will be
used for data obtained from the in-depth interview of the
participants.
