Philippine Standard Occupational
Classification (PSOC)

• is a statistical classification of the different occupational


groups of the working population, including the military
work force in the country
• basically patterned after the International Standard
Classification of Occupations (ISCO) released by the
International Labor Organization (ILO) but with
modifications to suit the national situation and
requirements

Uses of the PSOC:

General Purpose
• a basis for manpower / educational planning, program
formulation, and policy decision-making

Listahanan
• easily identify or group the target beneficiaries for the
NHTO stakeholders.
• it has a weights in our Proxy Means Test (PMT) Model
Conceptual Framework
Based on two (2) important concepts:
• SKILL is the ability to carry out the tasks of a given job.
(Ex. Analysing statistical data, Number crunching,)
(Driving skills, dress making)

• A JOB is a ‘set of tasks and duties carried out, or meant


to be carried out, by one person for a particular employer,
including self employment.
(Ex. Project Development Officer II, III, IV etc.)

Criteria Used in Classifying Occupations
• Skill level at the highest level or the major group level and measured
operationally by considering one or more of:
o nature of the work performed in an occupation
o required level of formal education ; and
o required amount of informal on-the-job training and /or previous
experience
• Skill specialization used in classifying occupations in sub-majors
groups, minor groups and unit groups and considered in terms of four
conceptual concepts:
o field of knowledge required
o tools and machinery used
o materials worked on or with: and
o kinds of goods and services produced.

Occupation
 For classification purposes, occupation is defined as
the "type of work a person does to earn his/her
living“

 What a man does for a living defines the


occupational classification group where he belongs
irrespective of the industry in which he/she is
employed.

 In the case of a person with dual activity, three


criteria may be used to determine the principal
activity he/she is engaged in: permanent, hours
work and income derived. Also known as PHI.

Hierarchy in selecting the occupation.

 Permanent. Which of the two occupations, is the


most permanent?

 Hour/s of Work. Which of the two occupations,


consumes longer hours?

 Income derived. Which of the two occupations,


provided a higher income.

specific occupation of the
household member

 If occupation is driver, ask what kind of vehicle does


he/she drives – bus, jeep, tricycle, kalesa, heavy truck
etc.

 If occupation is teacher, ask the grade level (Primary/


Secondary/ Special Needs)
