COMPUTER SCIENCE

• Computer science is the study of computers and their systems. Computer scientist are
not the same as Computer Engineers who mostly deal with the hardware aspect of
computers. Computer Science deals more with software and strive to make computer
do new things and be more efficient.
• This field is a start to many computer related fields such as: IT, Software Engineering,
Computer Programming, Ethical Hacking and a host of othere fields.
WHAT IS A SOFTWARE ENGINEER ?

• Software Engineering is the job field in Computer Science I plan to be.

• A Software engineer is someone who makes programs that run on a computer or phone.
• The software they make can be used for a lot of things such as texting, talking and playing
games.
WHERE DO THEY WORK ?

• For the most part software engineers work in teams in offices but there is a small percentage
who work alone and have at-home jobs.
• In teams for the most part they work on the design and make of the software they are making.
 • The educational requirements for this field are a Bachelors or
Associates degree in computer science.
• There are many schools that offer the program and it’s mostly
offered at technical schools.
• Southern Crescent Technical college, Geargia Tech, Kennesaw
State University are 3 schools in Gerogia that offer the
program.
EDUCATIONAL • There are however been a small percentage of software
engineers that do not have a degree but they have
PREPARATION certifications in Programming.
SOFTWARE ENGINEER RESPONSIBILITIES

• Software engineers work to create new programs for computers to work better and be smarter.
• They have a lot of work to do these are just a few of the responsibilities that they have.
• Testing new software and fixing errors.
• Monitoring system performance.
• Creates solutions to meet a companines technical needs.
• Develop and Execute project plans.
DEMOGRAPHICS

• Software engineering is a Job field that is rapidly growing as technology evolves and grows
better.
• In the US the average yearly income of a software engineer is $77k a year and has an expected
growth of 30% in the next 4 years. Most software enginnering companies are found in the
western US mostly in Calfornia.

• The field is a little diverse the racial group
that are mostly software engineers are White
making almost 41% of the population.
• The second at 12% is South Asian the lowest
group at 5% is African American mostly
males.
• This means that there is higher chance of
minorities getting a Job in the field to even
out the ratio.
• However it’s a very biased and competetive
field. It’s biased in the sense that there are
not many women in the field.
 ADVANTAGES OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERS

• This Job has many advantages to it because of the flexiblilty of most companies.
• They can work from anywhere that has internet access.
• The field always has learning oppourtunities.
• There are many oppourtunities to advance and move up in this field.
 DISADVANTAGES OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

• The pros of Software Engineering are great but there are also some cons or disadvantages as
well.
• Lack of social skills- Being a computer associated job many people are glued to their screens so
that means if you don’t have social skills already then you will be out of luck during projects.

• Another is the health concerns. Due to long sitting back problems have become common in
some but also diabetes and obesity have become common due to long unactive movement
through the day.
• The software engineering field is a computer field this means that you have to stay in touch with
new and emerging technology and familiarize yourself with them.
 WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS JOB?
• If you do not have a basic knowledege of Windows systems or do not know about Linux systems
then this is not the field for you.
• You have to be determined to be the best in this field because of competition.
• You also have to be social and willing to work on a team for projects and design builds.
• A software engineer needs to have strong skills in math for reasoning and calculating
probabilities.
• Along with math skills they also need to know a Programming Language such as javascript,
python or C+.
• You also need a lot of patience when programming.

• An influential person in the computer science field is Kimeberly Bryant.

• The programming field is a very biased field and not many women get into it, this makes it a
predominant male field.
• She is Influential because being a woman of color she had many challenges to overcome to
become a programmer, so she made her own organization to help women of color find interent
and carreers in STEM.
 REFLECTION

• My view of software engineering has not changed but I have learned that becoming a software
engineer won’t be easy but I am determined to keep going.
• To get a start on this I will start looking for internships and networking through them to find
more ways to expand my skills in the field.
