Perception<=>Cognition<=>Action

Perception is the organization, identification, and

interpretation of sensory information in order to represent
and understand the presented information, or the
environment.
Cognition is "the mental action or process of acquiring
knowledge and understanding through thought, experience,
and the senses".
Action is the fact or process of doing something, typically to
achieve an aim.

Perception-Action Coupling

Coupling between action and perception

● Action for perception
○ Move head to perceive depth
○ Manipulate object to perceive its shape
● Perception for action
○ Adjust arm and hand motion to grasp an object
Visual Channel
1. Visual field is about 180º

1. Focus of attention
Visual acuity: 0.04mm at 50cm

1. Peripheral perception
Less sensitive to colors, More sensitive to motion

1. Perception of color, motion, depth

The Monkey Business Illusion

We do not always notice

changes in visual stimuli, even
when the change is dramatic

Attention is selective:
human can filter content that
they are looking for
Auditory Channel: Hearing
1. Very large sensitivity range
2. Pitch and Loudness
3. Hearing without listening
« Cocktail-party » effect
1. Masking effects
Distance between sources
Distance between peak frequences
1. Localizing a source
Correlation with visual localisation

Touch: 6 types of receptors
Heat, Cold, Pain, Pressure, Vibration, Texture

Proprioception
Configuration of one’s body in space,
used to perceive, e.g., the shape of an object

Kinesthesia
Tension of one’s muscles, used to assess the
weight or resistance of an object

Bi-manual control (Yves Guiard)
Non dominant hand: sets the context
Dominant hand: acts within that context
Fitts Law
The time to acquire a target is a function of the distance to and size
of the target.

MT= a + b log(1 + D/W)

MT, movement time
D, distance to target
W, width of target
a, b, empirically determined constants

The Two Gulfs

Gulf of Execution Gulf of Evaluation

The gulf of execution is the degree to which the The gulf of evaluation is the degree to which the
interaction possibilities of an artifact, a system/artifact provide representations that
