Volleyball
O A game for two teams, usually of six
players, in which a large ball is hit by
hand over a high net, the aim being to
score points by making the ball reach
the ground on the opponent’s side of
the court.
History
O Volleyball was invented in 1895
by William G. Morgan, a gym teacher
at a YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
O He combined parts of tennis, baseball,
basketball and handball to create a
new game to be played indoors by
people who wanted less physical
contact than basketball.

 Rules
O A team consists of 6 players, three
located in the front of the attack line
and three behind.
O Play begins when a player attempts to
serve the ball over the net into the
opposing teams court.
 Rules
O The opposing team must use a
combination of no more than three
contacts with the volleyball to return to
the opponents’ side of the net.
O A point is scored when the ball touches
the court or an error is made.
 Rules
O When the service team loses
possession of the ball the opposing
team is said to have sideout.
O Balls that contact the line are
considered in.
O Serves that contact the net, but go over
the net are playable.
 Rules
O The game is played until one team
reaches a score of 25 and is ahead of
their opponent by 2.
O When the server crosses the line, it is
called a foot fault.
O A serve that does not go over the net or
does not land in the opponent’s side of
the court is called a service error.
 Rules
O A player who steps across the center
line or touches the net is said to have
committed a foul.
O After a side out the new serving team
rotates clockwise.

Passing
Straddle position-feet wide, right foot forward, knees

Contact ball low, near waist level, midline of body

whenever possible.
Push ball to target-transfer your weight from rear to

Right foot forward, knees bent-feet, hips, and

Hands up early-elbow bent, thumbs back, triangle-

4 Contact ball above forehead with finger pads.
Extend through the ball to the target-forcing the up

with height.
Skills
Serving underhanded & overhanded
Straggler your feet. Stand with your feet about
1
shoulder width apart.
For a right-handed player, the ball should be held
2
still in the left hand.
Hold the ball in front of you straight but with a
3
flexible elbow.
The right hand should make a fist with the thumb on
4
the top of the folded-in fingers.
Bring the right arm back and swing through to make
5
contact with the ball.

 Volleyball Terms
O Ace – a serve not returned by the
opposing team
O Attack – an attempt by the offensive
team to end the rally by hitting the ball to
the floor of the defensive team
O Attacker – a player who spikes or hits
the ball over the net
 Volleyball Terms
O Block – the action, above the net, by a
player resulting in preventing a spike
from entering their side of the court
O Foul – any violation of the rules that
results in the referee blowing their
whistle
O Hit – a term used for a spike or an
attack

O Rotation – a team earns a side out and
then moves one position clockwise on
the court before the next server
O Serve – a skill used to put the ball into

O Spike – a powerful attack that puts the

and hitting the ball with one hand
O Assist – a passing or setting the ball to a
teammate who attacks the ball for a kill
