Transformation project

Task 1
Famous Logos
Translations
 Definition:
A rigid transformation that moves every point of the
pre-image of a figure the same distance and direction to
create the image

 In all of the logos, the size, length, shape, lines, and

angle measures of a figure are preserved (pre-image is
congruent to image)
 This logo shows a translation because the shield is moved up and to the right or moved down and
to the left

Pre-image
Pre-image

1. The pre-image is moved to the 2. The pre-image is moved to the

right and up and the image is left and down and the image is
moved to the right and up the moved to the left and down the
same distance same distance
• This logo shows a translation because the circle is moved to the right or is moved to
the left

Pre-image Pre-image

1. The pre-image is moved to the right, the 2. The pre-image is moved to the left, the image
image is moved to the right the same distance, is moved to the left the same distance, the last
the last figure is also moved to the right the figure is also moved to the left the same
same distance distance
• This logo shows a translation because the figure is moved up or is moved down

Reflection
 Definition:

A rigid transformation that relative to a given line of reflection, a point on

the pre-image that is not on the line of reflection and its corresponding point on
the image can be connected by a segment for which the line of reflection is the
perpendicular bisector

 All of the figures keep segment lengths, angle measures, size, shape, and
lines

 Orientation is not preserved

line n

line m

 The line of symmetry could be line m or line n

 If on the coordinate plane, reflection across the x or
y axis
line m

 line m is the line of reflection

 If on the coordinate plane, reflection across the y axis
line m

 line m is the line of reflection

 If on the coordinate plane, reflection across the y axis
line m

• line m is the line of reflection

• If on the coordinate plane, reflection across the x or y
axis
Rotation
 Definition:
Each point on a figure is turned though a given
angle and direction around a given point (the center of
rotation) such that the distance between the point and the
center of rotation remains the same

 Center of rotation:
Fixed point about which the figure is turned
 Rotated 180 degrees counterclockwise from the center
of rotation
 Rotated 180 degrees counterclockwise from the center
of rotation
 Rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise from the center of
rotation
 Rotated 180 degrees counterclockwise from the center
of rotation
Symmetry
 Reflectional/Line
 The state of being able to be reflected across a line and
therefore produce an image that maps perfectly onto the
original

 Rotational
 The state of being able to be rotated 180 degrees or less
about a center point and therefore produce an image that
maps perfectly onto the original
 Reflectional symmetry: 1 fold
 Vertical
 When you fold the figure in half, one half perfectly matches
the other half
 Reflectional: 2 fold
 Horizontal and vertical
 When you fold the figure in half, one half perfectly matches the
other half

 Rotational: 180 degrees

 When you rotate the figure 180 degrees, it perfectly maps to the
original
 Reflectional symmetry: 1 fold
 Vertical
 When you fold the figure in half, one half perfectly
matches the other half
• Reflectional symmetry: 2 fold
– Horizontal and vertical
– When you fold the figure in half, one half perfectly matches the
other half
• Rotational: 180 degrees
– When you rotate the figure 180 degrees, it perfectly maps to the original
Task 2
Personal Logo
 1 fold reflectional symmetry (vertical)
 When you fold the figure in half, one half perfectly matches the other half
Task 3
Geometry class logo
line m

 Reflection across line m

 All points and corresponding points are the same distance
from the line of reflection
