Inclusive Engagement

Integrating gender into programs and trainings

1
Take out a piece of scrap paper…
• What comes to mind when you hear the term “gender”?

2
Basics of gender
Sex Gender
• Biological differences between • Expectations people have about
males and females men and women
• Stays the same across cultures • Differs between cultures

3
Gender and agriculture
• Women make up around
43% of agricultural labor
across developing
countries (probably more)
• Agriculture is most
important source of
employment for women
in rural areas in
developing countries

4
Gender and agriculture: The Gender Gap
“Women in agriculture and rural areas have one thing in common
across regions: they have less access than men to productive resources
and opportunities.

The gender gap is found for many assets, inputs and services – land,
livestock, labour, education, extension and financial services, and
technology – and it imposes costs on the agriculture sector, the broader
economy and society as well as on women themselves.”

5
Access vs control in agriculture
Access: permission to use a
specific resource

Control: ability to decide:

• Who land is allocated to
• What is produced on it
• Who can sell or trade the land

Graph shows the share of male and female agricultural holders in main
developing regions

the gender gap for development
6
Access vs control in agriculture
Access: permission to use a • Who decides which crops to
specific resource plant, when to harvest, when to
sell?
Control: ability to decide: • Who gets the income and from
• Who land is allocated to which crops?
• What is produced on it • Who gets to go to training
• Who can sell or trade the land workshops and who stays home
to work on the farm?
• Who has access to technology,
which technology, and why?
7
What are the benefits of identifying access and
control in agriculture?
• Help identify targets for new technologies and approaches
• Prevents unintentional distribution of technologies
• For example: Putting new technologies in the hands of people who will never
use it

8
Integrating Gender into
Agricultural Value Chains

9
What is an agricultural value chain?
• The range of goods and services necessary for an agricultural product
to move from the farm to the final customer or consumer).

10
Value Chain Assignment
In your groups
Step 1
• Arrange the value chain cards to show how the value chain occurds
• If there are links along the chain that are missing, make new ones and
add them in!
Step 2
• When you have completed the value chain, identify and add the roles
of men and women at each stage of the value chain
