ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF

GRADE 8 STUDENTS IN
SCIENCE AND ENGLISH
SUBJECT
Background of the Study

Science and English Academic subject are both taught in the school with the students by the
teachers. In science, whether it is chemistry, physics, biology or a mixture of the three, science
sparks and develops our natural curiosity to explore and learn about the world around us. As we
encounter science in our everyday lives, understanding basic studies develops our awareness of
difference climates, forces, and how things work. As science is a very hands-on subject, it teaches
and strengthens research, observation and analyzing skills through conducting experiments and
forming conclusions, and this encourages the brain to think independently and outside the box.
However, English subject is an important way of communicating not just in school and everyday life
but also internationally. English Language and Literature encourages us to use our imagination and
sparks creativity, teaches us essential social and language skills, reading and writing, and how to
communicate effectively.
English is one of the basic but major subject taught in a certain class. It is tackled and studied
as it serves as the bridge for communication especially for foreign countries. Without having the
capability of speaking using English language, lots of people would have the difficulty in
communicating with English speaking nation.
Except for its use as our communication, it also contains the facts and enough ideas on how to
properly write sentences and literature pieces. It is widely used not just on foreign countries but
in all over the world that makes it the ‘universal language’ for all.
English is the dominant business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to
speak English if they are to enter a global workforce. Research from all over the world shows
that cross-border business communication is most often conducted in English. Its importance in
the global market place therefore cannot be understated, learning English really can change
your life.
Many of the world’s top films, books and music are published and produced in English.
Therefore by learning English you will have access to a great wealth of entertainment and will be
able to have a greater cultural understanding.
Being equipped enough to understand and familiar in this subject would be a great big help
specially when understanding and analyzing statements and problems in a science problem.
Corresponding to English subject, Science is also one of the beneficial subject for a student. It
provides facts and ideas about our environment and also about ourselves. It is a great advantage
for the students in terms of knowing the purposes it serves in our community. With this, we can
also build and plan some actions on how we affect our biodiversity and what are the things we
could at least do to protect and nourish our natural resources.
It stands as our tool not just in knowing the scientific names and origins of objects but also their
value and importance in our world and in the human race. It supplies evidences about things
which we somehow look for why’ and how’s.
As stated, “Science is simply common sense at its best.” -Thomas Huxley. Learning science
education in the 21st century can be very beneficial to humanity and of all ages. Science s what
makes up the world, it is a core subject that allows students to experience investigation which
enable them to grasp a vast range of skills which result in rich understanding for the subject.
Science has led us to finding out things that give us what we have today. With the fact, without
science we would not have electricity which would mean no mobiles, internet, Facebook. We
would not have fridges to keep food fresh, television to entertain or even cars to travel in.
Scientific knowledge allows us to develop new technologies, solve practical problems, and make
informed decisions — both individually and collectively. Because its products are so useful, the
process of science is intertwined with those applications.
A lot of people taught that when it comes to Science subject it’s not easy and very
difficult but the truth is all you have to do is to apply every learnings that you’ve learned and
analyze to understand its own principle. Furthermore, English subject is also one of their
weakness, because learning grammar is very difficult for them.
Remember, this two main subjects touches our daily lives a lot. It serves as a guide to make our
life successful. Yes, it is not easy but it is also not difficult. All you have to do is to take time to
learn and analyze everything about it. It may be hard today, but when you’ve already learned
about it, it will become as your weapon for tomorrow.
Statement of the problem

The main purpose of this research is to find out the behavior of the Grade 7 of San Manuel High
School in academic performance of students in Science and English subject for their third
grading examination.
Specifically, the researchers intend to answer the following questions:
What is the performance of the Grade 7 students in their Science subject for the third grading
period?
What is the performance of the Grade 7 students in their English subject for the third grading
period?
Which subject the students perform well?
Research tool
The research tool that we used is a teacher – made test. The test examination in Science
is composed of 50 items multiple type of test. The content of the test are all about Chemistry. In
this examination, the student will use the periodic table of elements enable them to identify the
different groups or families of the following elements from the given choices. The English test
examination is composed of 50 items multiple choice and identification type of test. You have to
underlined, the correct personal pronoun to be used. These two test examination measures
your knowledge in understanding the contraction of sentence and in identifying the different
groups of elements.
Population and locale of the study
The participants of the study will be the grade 8 - Pythagoras of San Manuel High School
enrolled in this school year 2017 – 2018. The researchers intend to the administer questioner to
the respondents in the classroom, upon approval by the teacher by the teacher concerned of
the student regarding their academic performance in the subject Science and English.
Data gathering procedure

Data will be gathered through distributing the test papers. The researcher will
ask permission from the subject teacher for the floating of the test papers.
Explanation about the need to administer and accomplish, the test papers will
be given personally by the researchers. The researcher will administer the
examination inside the classroom and will assist the respondents as they
answer the examination in order to ensure satisfactory accomplishment, the
researchers will follow up from the respondents and retrieve the test
examination and provide clarification of the study. Once the accomplished test
questions are retrieved and checked the responses will recorded, tabulate
categorized, treated statistically and interpret accordingly.
Statistical treatment
Mean
In probability and statistics, mean and expected value are used synonymously to refer to
one measure of the central tendency either of the probability distribution of the random
variable characterized by that distribution. ¹ In the case of discrete probability distribution of a
random variable X, the mean is equal to the sum over every possible value weighted by the
probability of the value; that is, it is computed by taking the product of each possible value x of
X and its probability P(x), and then adding all these products together , giving. To get the mean
score we will be using the formula,

∑ x
X =
N

X = symbol for mean

∑× = total scores
N = no. of participants
Mean Percentage Score (MPS)

The MPS indicate the ratio between the number of the

correctly answered items and the total number of test question

or the percentage of the correctly answered items in a test.

Mean score
MPS= X 100

Total no. of items

Presentation, Interpretation and Analysis of Data
Table 1
Mean and Mean percentage Score of the Grade 8 – Pythagoras in their Third Periodical
Examination in their Science and English Subject

Science 18.28 18.2 3.40 -3.32 36.56%

English 23.3 23.2 8.94 0.01 46.6%

The respondent got a higher average in their English subject rather than their
Science subject. The respondent got a failed score in the both subject. It is
noticeable that the students are having a hard time in answering the exam. The
respondent having a weakness when it comes in identifying the different groups
of elements in Science subject and analyzing sentences in English subject. They
failed to understand the last topic of the third quarter.
Conclusion
Based on the findings of the research conducted the following conclusions were drawn:
•The respondent got an MPS of 36.56% in Science.
•The respondent got an MPS of 46.6% in English.
•The respondents got higher score in English than in science.
•They got low comprehension in the Science subject.
•They encountered trouble in identifying the different groups of elements and in solving for the
proton, neutron and electron of an element in the third periodical test in science subject.
•They got a low understanding in English Literature and Grammar in English test examination.
•The researchers found out that the student is more interested in English rather than Science subject.
•Even though they spend more time in reading the questions in both subjects, still they didn’t
understand the questions clearly that’s why they failed.
•They are more interested in reading English questions rather than Science because it is shorter and
easier to understand.
Recommendation
The following recommendations were drawn based on the conclusions:
The respondents should listen well during discussion and if they don’t understand something,
they should ask questions.
The respondents should review well before the exam to get a high score in science.
The respondents should comprehend what they’re reading.
The respondents should read novels, short stories and poems to improve their reading skills to
be able to understand what they’re reading.
The respondents should spend more time in studying both subjects to be able to get a high
score in their coming tests or exams.
The respondents can attend remedial classes if they can’t understand the lesson.
The respondents can seek help with other year levels if they can’t attend remedial classes.
The respondents can watch video presentations about their topics in YouTube.
