Sexuality
• Is an important component of one’s personality
• Is a natural and healthy part of life
• Is everything about being a male or female
• Is the most important aspect in masculine or feminine
identification
• Provides a sense of self-worth when sexual
understanding is positive
• Involves the name given at birth, the toys played with,
the clothes worn, the friends played with, and the
roles and responsibilities at home
• The process of sexual development begins from birth to
adulthood. It is a continuous developmental process
throughout life
Sexuality refers to your TOTAL
Self:
• Physical Self- the way you look as a man or a
woman
• Mental Self- The way you think as a man or a
woman
• Social Self- The way you interact with others
• Emotional Self- The way you feel about yourself
and others
• Ethical Self- The way you value relationships
Sexuality refers to your attitude
and behavior toward yourself
• How you see yourself
• How you feel about yourself
• How you think of yourself
• How you love yourself
Healthy Sexuality
Means taking high sense of
responsibility for all your actions
since this can affect self-esteem,
decision making, and behavior
Purpose of Gender and Human
Sexuality Education
• To develop an individual’s sexuality, which
includes an appreciation for self and the opposite
sex
• To promote wholesome family and interpersonal
relationships
• To find comfort with sexual roles (mother, father,
sister, brother, friend, wife or husband)
• To recognize bodily functions related to
reproduction

• To understand how emotions play a part in sexual
behavior
• To provide students with knowledge and skills
needed to establish and practice healthful
behaviors
• To produce students who are responsible and
have healthy sexuality
• To develop a healthy attitude towards life

1. Biological
A. Genetic Basis- Sex: Male (XY), Female
(XX)
B. Gonadal Basis- Gonads- Sex glands
-Male embryos develop testes about the seventh
week after conception
-Female embryos develop ovaries about the
twelfth week after conception
C. Structural Development- Male
reproductive structures, Female
reproductive structures

2. Psychosocial
A. Gender Identity- Recognition of one’s gender
(femininity or masculinity)
B. Gender Preference- Emotional and intellectual
acceptance of one’s own gender
• Sexual preference- Sexual or emotional attraction towards others
• Gender Orientation- gender to which the person is attracted to:
• Heterosexual- straight
• Homosexual- gay, lesbian
• Bisexual- both sexes
• Asexual- devoid of sexuality

C. Gender Adoption- The long process of
learning the behavior that is traditional for one’s
gender
D. Gender Identification- Achievement of a
personally satisfying interpretation of one’s
masculinity or femininity
• Gender Roles- The cultural expectations for masculine
and feminine behaviors and characteristics within a
particular society
Androgyny
• The blending of both masculine and feminine qualities
• Research data suggest that androgynous people are
more flexible and independent, have greater self-esteem,
have more positive attitudes towards sexuality, and show
more social skills and motivation to achieve
