Prenatal Care
Assess the medical history of the pregnant women:
Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Cardiovascular Diseases
Lifestyle:
Smoking, alcohol, stress
Tetanus Toxoid Immunization- to prevent tetanus in both mother and
baby
Micronutrient Supplementation- Vitamin A, Iron
Prenatal Care
PRENATAL VISITS
Normal pregnancy:
1-7 months- every month
8 months- every 2 weeks
9 months- weekly
High-risk Pregnancy:
More frequent check-up with the Obstetrician
Nutrition
• Total weight gain- 25 lbs
• Additional calories- 300 kcal
• Lactating women- 500 kcal
Complications during Pregnancy
1. Abortion- termination before age of viability
 Early abortion- before 16 weeks
 Late abortion- 16 to 24 weeks
 Types:
1. Threatened- spotting, painless, closed cervix
2. Inevitable- profuse bleeding, painful
3. Induced- therapeutic
4. Missed- retention of dead fetus
5. Complete

Post Partum Care
Recommended Schedule of Post Partum Care Visits:
1st Visit- 1st week post partum preferably 3-5 days
2nd Visit- 6 weeks post partum
New Born Care:
Expanded Program on Immunization: vaccines to preventable diseases:
- Poliomyelitis
- Tuberculosis
- Diphtheria
- Tetanus
- Pertussis
- Measles
New Born Care:
- Unang Yakap and Breast feeding
- Newborn Screening
Family Planning
- An intervention in attaining reproductive health
- Allows couples to freely decide on the number and proper spacing of births
