 FAMILY
Basic social institution and the primary group in
society.
Vary from culture to culture
 defines as a social group characterized by common
residence, economic cooperation, and reproduction.
(Murduck 1949:1)
define the family as a group of persons united by ties
of marriage, blood or adoption etc. (Burgess and Locke
1963:2)
 DESCENT AND MARRIAGE
KINSHIP- refers to the web of social
relationships that form an essential part of
the lives of most humans in most societies.
DESCENT- refers to the background or origin
of a person in terms of family or nationality.
 MARRIAGE
An important institutional element of the family.
companionship & family relations- it is the
important purpose of marriage (the code in
1949).
 FORMS OF MARRIAGE
Monogamy- the practice or state of being
married to one person at a time.
Polygamy-the practice or custom of having
more than one wife or husband at the same
time.
Polygyny-marriage in which two or more women share
a husband.
Polyandry-the state or practice of having more than
one husband or male mate at one time
 SELECTION OF MARRIAGE PARTNER

Endogamy- refers to the norm which

dictates that one should marry within
one’s clan or ethnic group.
Exogamy- prescribes that one can
marry outside one’s clan or ethnic
group.
 FAMILY ORIENTATION
Is the family into which one is born, and
where one is reared or socialized.
Consists of father, mother, brothers and
sisters.
 NUCLEAR FAMILY
is the smallest unit responsible for the preservation of
the value system of society.
Advantage -Emphasized strong allegiance to the
members.
-Independent resedence
- sexual attraction
 Disadvantage-Danger that children may develop
emotional problem due to the excessive child
centeredness of the family and attentiveness of the
parents for them.
 EXTENDED FAMILY
is composed of the two or more nuclear families, economically
and socially related to each other .
Advantage - It has diffused social relationship consequently
the children learn to relate with person of varying age
level.
-Variety of protection afforded to its member and
the aged can rely to the younger member to take of them
Disadvantage- The children overly dependent on
relatives.
-Suppress the development of self reliance, initiative
and independence.
