USING IDIOMS IN

COMMUNICATION
Aldrin Terrence A. Goco, LPT
Students would be able
to:
• know what is idiom;
• compare and contrast
literal and figurative
idiom by illustrating it;
• use idioms in writing.
Visualize the Idiom

Divide the class into groups of 4.

Students will pick a card and read the
idiom on it. Visualize what comes to
your mind. Take turns to write/draw
what you visualized on the card.
Repeat the same for each card.
Distribute set 1 of cards.
1.Why did you visualize the
idiom as such?
2.What is then the meaning of
the idiom?
3.Is the meaning the same as
what it wants to put across?
IDIOM
a group of words established by usage as having a
meaning not deducible from those of the
individual words (e.g., rain cats and dogs, see the light ).

It is a phrase or an expression that has a

figurative, or sometimes literal, meaning.
Categorized as formulaic language, an idiom's
figurative meaning is different from the literal
meaning.
Firm-Up:

Illustrate the literal and figurative idiom

Each group will be given two idioms. Each idiom

will be drawn on the paper given. It is divided into
literal and figurative. Students are going to draw in
the literal meaning the ‘actual or denotative’
meaning while in the figurative idiom they are going
to draw the operational meaning or what the poem
is trying to put across. They are going to use it in a
sentence afterward.
• Idiom makes writing expressive
• Use idioms with care
• Be sure of its meaning
• Make it suitable to the situation
• Use it in correct form
• Don’t use it in formal writing
