Advanced Communication Module Connections (contd.)

•AUI cable provides for data transmission

between the DNBI and each Advanced
Communications Module.

•The RS-423 control cable between the DNBI and

every Advanced Communications Module
enables the FoxGuard Manager to switch
between two redundant Nodebus cables.

The FoxGuard Manager also uses the control

cable for ancillary functions such as controlling
the DNBI front panel LEDs, verifying the status of
the Nodebus transceivers and reading the DNBI
letterbug identifier.

Control Blocks (ECBs)
Two varieties of configurable ECBs for
reading and writing process data on the
TRICON:

•I/O Module ECBs

•Window ECBs
FoxGuard ECBs

I/O Module ECBs

ECB types (4) provided for accessing data from

the TRICON I/O modules. These I/O Module
ECBs provide both the process points and status
information such as bad data and out-of-range
alarming. The process points in the ECBs are
then connected to I/O blocks which condition the
data, convert the points to engineering units and
make them available to other blocks.
FoxGuard ECBs

Window ECBs

ECB types (6) used to access aliases in the

TRICON main processors. The FoxGuard
Manager Window ECBs can be configured
to read or write to 16 non-contiguous
process variables of the same data type.
These window-type ECBs can be connected
directly to other blocks without the use of
I/O blocks.

Digital Input Modules

 The DI modules fall under one of the three categories:

a. Simplex
b. TMR
c. TMR Enhanced (with self test)
 Each Digital Input modules has three isolated legs -- A, B, C. Each
leg has a microprocessor that independently scans the inputs once
a millisecond, compiles the data and transmits it to the I/O
processor in the corresponding main processor module upon
demand. The input data received by the I/O processors is voted by
the main processor modules, before it is used in the program.
Digital Input Modules......continued

 Field connections are through a separate field termination

module - Internal Termination Module inserted directly
into the chassis or a cable interface to a remotely located
External Termination Assembly.
 Hot Spare functionality is a standard feature of all I/O
modules. This allows on line replacement of a faulty
module or continuous backup to an active module.
Model #3504E - 24Vdc or 48Vdc
DIGITAL OUTPUT MODULES

 Three basic types of Digital Output Modules:

a. Simplex (Relay Output)
b. TMR (AC and DC)
c. Supervised Digital Output Module
 Three identical, isolated, fully triplicated legs in every module
except simplex modules
 Each Leg has an I/O microprocessor which receives its output
table from the I/O processor on the corresponding Main Processor.
 Various Modules perform (OVD) Output Voter Diagnostics
DIGITAL OUTPUT MODULE...continued

 TMR Digital Output Modules

The output switching devices is switched on of off
periodically as part of the OVD. Normally , this glitch
is transparent to most field devices. The OVD can be
disabled from Tristation. This will disable OVD on all
Outputs of the card. If during a glitch, the Output does
not switch from ON to OFF, the OVD will be disabled
by the DO card.
Model #3603B - 120Vdc Model #3604E - 24Vdc
Model #3607E - 48Vdc
Output Voter Diagnostic (OVD)

 OVD is a diagnostic test conducted periodically by the

firmware of the following TMR Digital Output Modules.
a. 115 VAC Model 3601/3601E
b. 120 VDC Model 3603B
c. 48 VDC Model 3607E
d. 48 VAC Model 3608/3608E
e. 24 VDC Model 3604E
Output Voter Diagnostic (OVD)...continued
 In applications where the load (relays or solenoids) remains
energized (as in ESD systems) for extended periods, The OVD
toggles the quad switches to test their integrity. If during the
OVD the Output does not switch from On to Off the OVD for all
points on the DO card will be automatically disabled and the
Fault LED will be turned ON The diagnostics will indicate a
Board Voter Failure.
 If during the OVD a Load which is usually de-energized does not
switch from Off to On then the Load fuse LED will be on but the
OVD continues to execute.

The OVD can be disabled using Tristation Software diagnostics.
